On my first visit to the Backyard by Devils Backbone Brewing Company, not far from the Corner, their laid-back atmosphere hits the backyard theme spot-on — with dogs welcome at their outside patio seating and huge yellow Adirondack chairs inside. While I found their paninis to be on the slightly pricey end, I think this is the perfect spot to grab a drink and appetizers while watching a game with friends.

While autumn is the quintessential season for baked goods, I returned to sunnier days to make my boyfriend an ice cream cake for his birthday this past weekend. The clear skies and mid-70s weather Sunday paired beautifully with a cotton candy, Oreo-caramel ice cream cake. Surprising my boyfriend with his favorite ice cream flavor from the beloved Moo Thru at the Dairy Market, combined with delicious Oreos and rich caramel sauce, this cake made our celebrations all the sweeter. This simple ice cream cake recipe is easy to customize and the perfect surprise treat for a celebration.

One thing no one prepared me for in my adult life is how difficult it truly is to plan what I’m going to eat. Salad jar meal prep has become my go-to school and work lunch that I can count on to be quick and easy — and taste good enough to eat day after day. With endless customization and relatively efficient preparation, salad jars are my new favorite way to meal prep each week. Whether you’re trying to eat more greens or just looking to add some lunchtime excitement to your week, I highly recommend giving salad jars a try.

The Virginian celebrated its 100-year anniversary with hourly raffle giveaways, a lunch special and much more this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.. Replete with a caricaturist, a photo booth, limited edition anniversary themed merch, a D.J. and 1920s cocktails, the Virginian made sure the party went on throughout brunch, lunch, dinner and late night bites despite the tropical storm raging outside.

With its unique location and semi-industrial yet retro vibes, Firefly delivers both great food and a fun experience. The menu features several American and fusion selections — I highly recommend giving their wonton nachos a try — but what really sets Firefly apart from all other restaurants I’ve visited is the wide selection of arcade games displayed toward the back half of their main dining room. Firefly is the place to go if you’re looking for a unique, retro spot to not only enjoy a classic American quality meal, but also bond with your friends.

Swinging open the front door of Guajiros Miami Eatery is like entering a portal to Florida. With a bustling energy and upbeat music playing, the welcoming wait staff immediately put a smile on my face. Serving many dishes familiar to my mixed Latinx background, Guajiros provided a unique twist on classic Cuban-inspired Miami cuisine that exceeded my expectations. With a varied menu sure to have something for everyone, Guajiros is a must-visit restaurant for anyone spending time in Downtown Charlottesville.

With the birds trilling early in the morning and lawnmowers buzzing throughout Grounds, there is no doubt that spring has finally arrived in Charlottesville. The warm and bright weather not only inspires me to spend more time outdoors — it reignites my passion for gardening. I have always been absolutely fascinated by the idea of growing my own food and an internet deep-dive into this very idea brought me to the informative Epic Gardening YouTube channel.

With cool piña coladas in hand and warm, fragrant pastries fresh out of the oven — my Saturday morning at the International Center was full of delicious food and friendly community. This past weekend I led my first cooking class of about 15 participants through making virgin piña coladas and pastelitos — guava and cream cheese pastries. Since the cost of materials was covered by the center, and offered its on-site kitchen to host the class, volunteering to lead a cooking class was a simple and rewarding commitment.

Nothing is better than homemade bread fresh out of the oven covered in cheesy, garlicky, buttery goodness. Over the years as I’ve developed my baking skills and explored many interesting recipes, I’ve learned that most store-bought baked goods are so much better when homemade. Bread is one of my favorite foods to bake because it is extremely rewarding and relatively easy to make. Since my brother is a huge fan of garlic bread, I’ve learned to make two versions that never fail to be a big hit with anyone. The more complex route is to bake my own French bread, then slice it in two and lather it with garlic butter and cheese — while I love this version, it’s rather time-consuming.

A much-beloved contributor to the iconic Charlottesville food scene, MarieBette Café and Bakery on Rose Hill Drive — along with its sister location Petite MarieBette in Downtown Charlottesville — surely lives up to the hype. While the artisanal French cuisine served at both locations comes with a steep price tag, the quality and atmosphere are unmatched. I highly recommend checking out either storefront, especially while Hot Chocolate Month is here.

Over winter break, my family went on a week-long trip to Puerto Rico — it was a culinary awakening like no other. As a person of mixed ethnicity with family ties to Cuba, Japan, Germany and Puerto Rico, I have struggled to fit in with any one group. Visiting Puerto Rico for the first time, I was immersed in a culture that was both new and familiar. From the rich history of Old San Juan and beautiful landscape of El Yunque National Forest to the hearty aroma of locally-made food, Puerto Rico captivated both my heart and my stomach.

Located between The Space Downtown and Hot Yoga Charlottesville at 214 W Water Street, Iron Paffles is owned by English immigrant and entrepreneur Kathryn Matthews. The restaurant is hard to miss, with gear decals on the restaurant’s exterior windows and a chalkboard outside the door advertising sandwich specials.

It is not the leaves changing color — or the cooler weather — that signifies the presence of fall for me, but rather the Trader Joe’s seasonal fall items making their way back on the shelves. Few things are better on a chilly autumn morning than a hot breakfast and this French toast recipe is sure to get those cozy vibes just right.
