This past weekend saw Virginia track and field stay home in Charlottesville to host the Virginia Challenge Friday and Saturday. The event was filled with Cavaliers making it onto Virginia all-time lists and recording personal bests and was highlighted by junior Nathan Mountain toppling the Virginia steeplechase record and running the “A” cut for the upcoming Olympic Trials. The weekend was wrapped up with a Senior Day celebration Saturday that honored the team’s graduating athletes.

Saturday’s game between No. 4 Virginia and No. 7 Syracuse at JMA Wireless Dome saw the teams battling back and forth in a game of runs. Unfortunately for the Cavaliers (10-3, 1-2 ACC), the Orange (11-4, 3-1 ACC) had the final one. Despite gaining possession twice in the final 45 seconds, Virginia was unable to score.

As viewers settled in their seats at the Ruth Caplin Theatre, the hall lights dimmed, leaving a single spotlight on a group of dancers on stage. A moment of stillness blanketed the theater, and then the ensemble began to move. Using smooth, graceful motions, the group danced initially in silence. The quiet was broken up only by intermittent words and phrases uttered by the dancers in a manner reminiscent of dialogue in a play. This dance, titled “Here is Sanctuary,” was the opening performance of the Spring Dance Concert, presented by the University Department of Drama’s dance program.

Nobody has to mention the last time Virginia men’s lacrosse played Notre Dame. The thought of it just lingers in everyone’s minds — the late lead that evaporated and the four Fighting Irish goals in four minutes to send Virginia trundling home. Now, though, a rematch is on the horizon, an inescapable narrative swirling around Saturday’s charged rematch.

As I write this, I am in utter disbelief that my first year is coming to an end. These last eight months flew by. Coming to Charlottesville from Pennsylvania, a five-hour drive away, was a huge culture shock — much more so than I imagined it would be. In an attempt to transition to University life, I found myself saying “yes” to way too many things, which left me feeling detached from my surroundings rather than at home on Grounds. When I eventually learned to say “no,” I found myself embracing the everyday aspects of college life, which allowed me to truly feel comfortable in my own skin at the University.

After a Commonwealth Clash loss to Virginia Tech Tuesday, and a devastating 12-inning loss Friday, Virginia managed two one-run victories Saturday to take two of three games against Duke in Durham, N.C. The Cavaliers (30-15, 13-8 ACC) had won just one game in 13 prior matchups against the No. 3 Blue Devils (39-6, 17-4 ACC), who had not lost a series in 2024 until facing Virginia.

Coach Tony Elliott was busy this offseason, shopping for a significant class of transfer portal talent. His Cavaliers also return promising underclassmen on defense such as sophomore cornerback Dre Walker, sophomore defensive end Mekhi Buchanan and sophomore safety Caleb Hardy. Complemented by vetted talent on offense, Virginia could finally emerge from the ACC basement and play ultra-competitive football in 2024. While the season opener is still several months away, a few standouts were found in the Spring Game — a scrimmage where the Cavaliers were divided into the Blue Team and the White Team.

With new classrooms, student research areas and sustainability-focused architecture, the new School of Data Science building will not only serve data science students and faculty, but act as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration and research at the University. The SDS works to live up to its nickname as “a school without walls” through both the building’s open layout and the curriculum’s goal of promoting research and collaboration across disciplines.

Last month at the 2024 NCAA Championship, the Virginia women’s swimming and diving team secured its fourth straight national title — that achievement only extended the dynasty the program has been building for years. While they aren’t alone in winning four consecutive championships — Texas and Stanford won five straight titles in 1988 and 1996, respectively — Virginia may soon join those ranks in 2025. Made possible by top-notch recruiting, the program remains at the top of the sport despite constant key losses in personnel.

The students in the art history department’s University Museums Internships course work with museum professionals to curate an art exhibit, carefully selecting pieces that work to highlight an important theme to the Charlottesville community. This year, the team of students worked together to curate “The Spaces We Seek,” an exhibit centering around the ways in which people take up the physical and metaphorical space around them.

Most of us enter romantic, exclusive relationships hoping to find love — or at least some form of it. You might dream of finding someone who understands you perfectly, buys you flowers unprompted or gives you their jacket when you’re cold, even if they are too. But in the honeymoon phase, you may run into a problem — wondering the right time to say “I love you.”

In a small, unassuming building hidden behind a gas pump, Hunt Country Market & Deli serves my favorite sandwiches in Charlottesville. The take-out shop offers a variety of signature subs, all aptly named after racehorses in true horse-country fashion. Each sandwich is only $6.99 and is handmade as soon as you order. Hunt Country is the perfect spot to grab some lunch for a picnic, or my personal favorite — the best way to fight Foxfield famish.

Craig Littlepage, Monica Wright Rogers and Chris Long are forever University legends. Littlepage served in the athletic department for 35 years — plus 9 years in various roles with the men’s basketball program — while the latter two inductees each enjoyed lengthy professional careers in the WNBA and NFL, respectively. This weekend, all three will officially be inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

Virginia women’s lacrosse ended its regular season play on a high note Wednesday at Thompson Field in Blacksburg, as the Cavaliers (13-3, 6-3 ACC) got the better of their in-state rivals Virginia Tech by a 14-12 margin in the Commonwealth Clash. The win over the Hokies (9-8, 2-7 ACC) was another important one for Virginia in the ever-competitive ACC as the team carries momentum into the ACC Tournament.

Even before the conclusion of Daniel Craig’s run as James Bond with 2021’s “No Time to Die,” there existed much chatter and conspiracy about which actor should follow in his footsteps. This conversation was revitalized in the past few months, catalyzed by the recent rumor that Aaron Taylor-Johnson — a British actor known for “Bullet Train” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” — has been offered the role.

My mother embraces silence. She applies the philosophy of “being seen, not heard” to nearly everything. But while she shies away from using her voice, she makes her thoughts loud and clear through a different language — cooking.

Sophomore guard Ryan Dunn announced Tuesday his decision to declare for the 2024 NBA Draft and forgo his two remaining years of eligibility with Virginia. Dunn spent two seasons with the program, asserting himself as one of the nation’s premier defenders with 110 blocks in 65 games and a nod on the ACC All-Defensive Team this past season.

With classes, studying and extracurriculars making days on Grounds feel long and laborious, it is hard to believe that it is already the end of April, and the spring semester is coming to a close. With the last day of classes in sight and the finish line so close, there's no time to give up. These revitalizing songs will give University students the needed push and inspiration to power through exam season to the end of the academic year.
