“It’s not a skirt. It’s a pair of culottes,” David Sedaris said as he strode onto the stage at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center Tuesday. He was referring to his own pants, a shimmering bronze garment draping down to his mid-calf. Combined with a dapper white dress shirt, the flamboyant culottes created quite the effect.

In 1989, the Iranian government shocked the world by issuing a fatwa ordering the execution of British-Indian author Salman Rushdie. It’s a familiar scene to many U.Va. students — sun shines on brick walls and white columns, green grass glows from beneath a cornhole board and students mill around, laughing, talking, enjoying the afternoon. And up on stage a singer with a mop of curly red hair belts out something by Blues Traveler or the Eagles. Behind him, an electric guitar twangs and a saxophone purrs with a warm, lively melody.

Matthew McConaughey burst onto the scene in 1993, shining as the insouciant Wooderson in the classic coming-of-age comedy “Dazed and Confused.” He starred during the 90’s — anointed as the industry’s next big leading man — before sliding gently into a rut of pedestrian romantic comedies. However, in 2012 he returned to center stage with a role in “Magic Mike,” and has since enjoyed a revitalized and reinterpreted career.

Fraternities and sororities, be warned. “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” is not like “Old School” – this latest film, starring Seth Rogen, takes a harsh view of American Greek life. The movie sharply parodies fraternity culture, repeatedly attacking Greek life and its traditions as backwards and sexist.

Movie violence can be exhilarating. Classic films like “Fight Club" and “A Clockwork Orange” are riveting in their depravity. Recently, “Mad Max: Fury Road” hit theaters in a titillating whirl of fists, cars, and explosions. Director Quentin Tarantino has built a career on sadism and shock with movies like “Reservoir Dogs” and “Kill Bill.” Like these movies, “The Revenant” is brimming with bloodshed, but the violence is not gripping so much as it is wearying.

The scene was quintessentially theatrical. One hundred and fifty Intro to Drama students were packed in the lobby of the Ruth Caplin Theatre, frantically preparing for their final exam — a performance. A graduate assistant briskly walked up to the professor and said, “Well, we’re missing an actor,” while nearby a student in a bear costume discussed a recent final exam with his friends. In the corner, another group stood, arms linked, warming up their vocal chords. The air was full of energy.

Her father broke down in tears. So did Acero.

“FIFA 16,” the highly anticipated latest installment in EA’s best-selling soccer video game series, was released Sept. 22. It’s gameplay is a modest improvement on past iterations of the game. Everything is slower — players sprint more slowly, they take longer to change direction and they take longer to control the ball. This is an improvement, as it emphasizes tactics and patient play. Passing the ball well and keeping possession are important ways to draw your opponents into vulnerable positions in “FIFA 16,” mirroring how real soccer is played. This is a departure from previous versions of “FIFA,” in which the best way to win was often to simply pick the fastest players and out-run your opponent.
