The first Virginia football game I watched was when the team took on the Oregon Ducks at Scott Stadium in the second week of the 2013 season. With my brother being a first-year at the time and the team coming off an impressive win over Bronco Mendenhall’s BYU team, I wanted to see what all the hype in Charlottesville was about.

When then-junior Virginia quarterback Matt Johns threw for six touchdowns in the first three games of last season, I became convinced he would be the person to finally lead Virginia back to a winning season. In fact, I was so confident in his ability that when Virginia played Boise State in week four, I bet my skeptical friend three dollars that Johns would lead the team down the field for a touchdown on the first drive.

In sending 18 representatives to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Virginia athletic department had much to be proud of prior to the games’ Opening Ceremony. Just eight years prior, Virginia only had nine representatives at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. However, not only did Virginia have a greater presence at this year’s Olympics, but several athletes made the school known on a global stage, as well, through their successes. Here is a list of the top three Virginia athletes from the Olympics thus far:

When all eyes were on Beijing, China during the 2008 Summer Olympics, the Cavaliers sent nine representatives to compete and coach on the grandest athletic stage of them all. Eight years later, the Cavaliers have now doubled that number. Starting Aug. 5 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 18 individuals with ties to Virginia – 16 athletes and two coaches – will represent seven different countries in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Here are some highlights of a group of standouts:

There is only one word that can properly describe the No. 5 Virginia rowing team — dynastic. With the ACC championship regatta being established in 2000, the team had won 15 of 16 championships heading into this season. After wrapping up action in Clemson, S.C. Saturday, the Cavaliers made it 16 out of 17 ACC Championships by winning their seventh consecutive title.

Competing fresh off the Virginia Challenge — one of the most nationally competitive outdoor track and field meets of the year — a limited representation of the Virginia outdoor track and field teams competed at the Highlander Invitational at Radford, Va. this past weekend.

With 61 teams and over 1,200 competitors coming to Charlottesville last week for the Virginia Challenge, the Virginia men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams had a lot on their plate in terms of competition. Nonetheless, the Cavaliers stepped up to the plate and won several events. For the No. 4 men, two people shone in particular, earning the honors as ACC Performers of the Week: juniors Filip Mihaljevic and Henry Wynne.

This past weekend, 62 teams and over 1,200 athletes gathered in Charlottesville to participate in the Virginia Challenge — one of the most competitive meets of the season. That didn’t deter the Virginia outdoor track and field teams, though. The Cavaliers embraced the competition and their tenacious attitude led to another successful meet for the teams.

On a blustery Saturday evening two weeks ago, the Virginia track and field teams wrapped up their first home meets of the season with their heads held high. Collectively, they had broken many school and personal records, won a plethora of events and continued coalescing as a team.

This weekend provided a tale of two home meets for Virginia’s track and field teams. Friday evening, both teams competed against Columbia, Maryland and Pennsylvania at the UVA Quad. On the following day, the Cavaliers hosted the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational.

Heading into March 19, the Virginia outdoor track and field teams had a reason to be excited — they would be opening up their season performing in front of their home crowd in the Virginia Cup. Unfortunately, inclement weather forced the event to be cancelled. A few weeks later, the Cavaliers will get their chance to perform in Charlottesville in the U.Va. Quad Friday and the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational Saturday.

Ever since he was hired as the director of Virginia track and field and cross country, coach Bryan Fetzer has preached a motto to his teams: “Get better everyday in every way.” This weekend, the Virginia outdoor track and field teams will get to set the bar to improve from by competing at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. from March 31-April 2.

After competing in three events each, senior Yannick Kaeser and freshman Zach Fong, the sole representatives of the Virginia men’s swimming and diving team, wrapped up the NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Ga. Saturday.

Throughout most of his Virginia swimming career, senior Yannick Kaeser has been the crown of the program. Representing Switzerland in 2012 Summer Olympics, Kaeser has gone on to break two Virginia records in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke.

Last season, the Virginia women’s swimming and diving team had one main goal: to be the best squad in program history. Finishing fifth at NCAA Championships, the Cavalier women were able to accomplish that goal.

The Virginia women’s swimming and diving team has done it all this season. Touting a perfect 8-0 record during the season, being ranked first in the nation for the first time in program history and winning a ninth-consecutive ACC Championship, the Cavalier women have asserted dominance throughout.

Competing in four events at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala. — the men’s mile, distance medley relay and shot put along with the women’s mile — the Cavaliers produced a champion and a runner-up at the conclusion of the meet on March 12, leading the Virginia men to a program-best eighth place finish.
