After falling to North Carolina Sunday in the ACC Championship, No. 1 seed Virginia hosts Radford Saturday at 7 p.m. in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers (16-1-3, 6-0-3 ACC) have a 34-12-4 record overall in NCAA Tournament games at Klöckner Stadium and will face the Highlanders (16-5-0, 7-3 Big South) in their 26th consecutive tournament appearance.

No. 11 Virginia defeated James Madison 65-34 in its home opener at John Paul Jones Arena Sunday night. The Cavaliers (2-0, 1-0 ACC) toppled the Dukes (1-1, 0-0 CAA) in the two teams’ first meeting since Virginia opened the 2014-15 season with a 79-51 win in Harrisonburg. Virginia has never lost in the 10 matchups between the two squads.

In arguably the most exciting match of No. 1 Virginia's 2019 season, the Cavaliers (16-1-3, 6-0-3 ACC) suffered their first loss against No. 3 North Carolina in the ACC Championship Sunday at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.. In the teams’ first meeting this season, Virginia sent the game into overtime with a goal by freshman midfielder Diana Ordonez, but the Tar Heels (19-1-1, 9-0-1 ACC) scored in the second period of overtime to win the game 2-1.

No. 1 Virginia brought down No. 9 Duke 1-0 in a highly competitive ACC quarterfinal matchup Sunday at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers (15-0-3, 7-0-3 ACC) played the Blue Devils (8-3-7, 3-2-6 ACC) to a scoreless tie earlier in the season but were able to overcome Sunday with a goal by senior forward Meghan McCool.

No. 1 Virginia women’s soccer finished the regular season perfect, remaining undefeated and having conceded just five goals to opponents. The Cavaliers’ (14-0-3, 6-0-3 ACC) next challenge comes Sunday, when they square off against No. 9 Duke in the ACC quarterfinal at Klockner Stadium. The teams’ last matchup Sept. 29 ended in a scoreless draw as neither team could take the lead through two periods of overtime play.

Seven games and over 775 minutes — that’s how long junior goalkeeper Laurel Ivory played without conceding a goal before a heroic Boston College shot ended her streak Sunday. In her three years at Virginia, the junior is already fourth all-time in shutouts and fifth all-time in victories. Ivory is impressive not only in her ability to produce clean sheets, but also in the intensity she brings to every match.

In a rainy Sunday afternoon matchup, the unbeaten Cavaliers (12-0-3, 4-0-3 ACC) celebrated Senior Day with a win over the Fighting Irish. Virginia cruised past Notre Dame (9-5-1, 3-3-1 ACC) 3-0 with goals by senior forward Meghan McCool, freshman forward Diana Ordonez and sophomore forward Rebecca Jarrett.

The Seminoles (11-3-0, 5-1-0 ACC) were coming off of a nine-game winning streak and were perfect at home this season as the Cavaliers (11-0-3, 3-0-3 ACC) took down the ACC leader in overtime.

No. 1 Virginia went on the road Friday to take on Miami, recording a shutout victory against the Hurricanes (3-5-2, 0-3-1 ACC). The Cavaliers (10-0-2, 2-0-2 ACC) found their rhythm early, applying strong offensive pressure. Miami couldn’t keep up as freshman midfielder Diana Ordonez and sophomore midfielder Alexa Spaanstra produced goals to lead to the 3-0 final.

The U.S. women’s national team generated international buzz with their extraordinary World Cup run this summer in France. A handful of national team stars played at Virginia for Coach Steve Swanson, who also served as an assistant coach on the USWNT. Becky Sauerbrunn, defender and Class of 2007 alumna, Morgan Brian, midfielder and Class of 2014 alumna and Emily Sonnett, defender and Class of 2015 alumna, all took on major roles at Virginia.

In a sweltering match at Klockner Stadium Sunday afternoon, No. 1 Virginia and No. 10 Duke battled through overtime after neither team found the net during regulation. The Cavaliers (9-0-2, 1-0-2 ACC) looked dominant as they found countless opportunities in the first half to score on the Blue Devils (6-1-3, 1-1-2 ACC). Junior goalkeeper Laurel Ivory came up with three major saves in overtime, but Virginia was unable to put the ball away as the minutes ticked down.

Following a disappointing loss to the Hokies in 2018, undefeated Virginia women’s soccer took revenge on No. 16 Virginia Tech in an exciting second half performance at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia (9-0-1, 1-0-1 ACC) battled against Virginia Tech (9-1, 1-1 ACC) in a scoreless first half before senior forward Megan McCool found the back of the net in the 71st minute. Freshman forward Diana Ordoñez celebrated her birthday with a goal in the 84th minute to push the Cavaliers to a 2-0 final.

No. 1 Virginia women’s soccer faced Wake Forest on the road Friday in a close matchup that ended in an overtime draw. Junior midfielder Anna Sumpter produced the equalizer late in the second half to send the game into overtime, but the Cavaliers (8-0-1, 0-0-1 ACC) couldn’t find the winner, giving the Demon Deacons (5-2-2, 0-0-1 ACC) an impressive 1-1 result against the top-ranked team in the country.

The No. 4 Virginia women’s soccer team concluded its seven-game home stretch with a win over William & Mary Thursday before challenging No. 8 Penn State on the road Sunday. The high-powered Cavaliers (8-0, 0-0 ACC) made scoring look effortless as they routed the Tribe (2-4-1, 0-0 CAA) to the tune of 8-1 and outplayed the Nittany Lions (4-2-2, 0-0-0 Big Ten) in a close 2-1 match.

Before the 2019 season began, Coach Steve Swanson returned to Charlottesville fresh off of a World Cup win in France with the United States Women’s National Team, ready to take on the year with renewed confidence in his Virginia team. Just six games in, the No. 5 Virginia women’s soccer team has already justified its high expectations with dominant play on both sides of the ball.

Virginia shut out Georgetown and Minnesota 2-0 in matches at Klöckner Stadium. In both games, the Cavaliers (6-0, 0-0 ACC) dominated on defense, allowing a combined 34-7 advantage in shots. Virginia has conceded one goal in six games, recording an impressive 25 goals on the season thus far.
