The University Judiciary Committee elected third-year Engineering student Kevin Warshaw as chair of its executive committee for the upcoming term during a closed meeting of the newly-elected UJC committee members Sunday evening. Four executive committee vice chairs were also chosen in the closed session.

The Board of Visitors Committee on the University of Virginia’s College at Wise met Thursday morning to consider new academic initiatives at U.Va.-Wise. The Committee discussed the proposed implementation of a new online nursing degree program at U.Va.-Wise and the establishment of a nurse practitioner program.

The Honor Audit Commission released a report this week evaluating the current state of the honor system at the University and identifying areas where the system can improve. Through student and faculty survey data and comparisons to systems at peer institutions, the report identified an overlap of students who feel the Honor Committee represents student opinions but does not effectively represents the diversity of the student body. The survey work also found a majority of student and faculty respondents support an Honor penalty which varies depending on the severity of the offense.

Following a joint meeting with the University Judiciary Committee Sunday, the Honor Committee held its own general body meeting where members voted in favor of implementing a proposed reform to the Informed Retraction process allowing accused students to combine multiple offenses under one IR.

The University Health System is in the process of notifying 1,882 patients about a security breach that occurred between May 2015 and December 2016 where an unauthorized Ohio man, Phillip Durachinsky, may have been able to view patient information. The University Health System issued a press release disclosing the matter Wednesday.

At their meeting Sunday, the Honor Committee proposed a reform to the existing Informed Retraction process as well as an amendment to the Honor constitution. The IR reform would allow students to combine multiple singular offenses under a single IR, and the amendment would make it possible for Committee members to remove a representative who cannot successfully fill their role on the Committee.

905 male students participated in the 2018 recruitment process for the University Inter-Fraternity Council, compared to 1061 last year. While participation dropped by close to 15 percent, the acceptance rate of bids — invitations to join a fraternity — was slightly higher than in 2017.

The Honor Committee held its first meeting of the semester Sunday evening and introduced a new outreach campaign entitled “What Is The Point?” Brandt Welch, a fourth-year Engineering student and Honor Committee vice chair for community relations, introduced the initiative and said the title was inspired by Honor Committee Chair Devin Rossin’s speech during Honor Convocation in 2017.

An attempted burglary on Virginia Avenue was reported to University Police early Thursday morning. In a University wide email alert issued by University Chief of Police Michael Gibson, the incident took place between 2 a.m. and 2:50 a.m.
