Pavilion VIII, the long-time residence of the University Guide Service, should be open and welcoming for all students. Everyone -- not just Guides -- should feel able to use it as a place to rest and relax between classes. But most students have no idea the pavilion is open to everyone. Even the ones who know still sometimes experience the occasional stare implying "What are you doing here?" The idea that one of the original pavilions belongs exclusively to members of a specific club is ludicrous.

Savvy investors always preach the strengths of a diverse portfolio: Invest in many different types of companies and industries, and you will be rewarded. The same principle should apply to nominating students for graduate fellowships. Nominate at least 10 or 15 qualified candidates for the Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships, and the University stands a better chance of having one of its applicants selected.

Last year 829,625 people were arrested in the United States for marijuana violations -- more than all the arrested murderers, rapists, robbers, sexual predators and arsonists combined. Of those arrested, almost half were between the ages of 18 and 24. Since 1998, whenCongress passed the Aid Elimination Penalty to the Higher Education Act, any student convicted of a drug-related offense immediately and permanently loses all federal aid including low-interest loans. The devastating effects of this policy reveal that American higher education has become yet another casualty of the hopeless War on Drugs.

Think of the safest, most public place in Charlottesville, somewhere you would feel completely safe joining loved ones for a stroll. The Downtown Mall springs to mind: It has less crime and more police presence than almost any other area in the city and, at least during the day, families, children and the occasional roving band of emo high-schoolers pack the brick-lined walkway between rows of shops and restaurants. But the way the Charlottesville Police Department describes the situation, you'd think it was describing downtown Beirut. Police Chief Tim Longo presented City Council recently with a proposal to install 30 surveillance cameras on the Downtown Mall. The proposal, which could cost $300,000, is as much a waste of money as it is a waste of cameras.

Final exams have been -- and probably always will be -- a sourceof fear and loathing for caffeine-addled students cowering behindtowers of textbooks in dimly lit libraries. That horrific tableau of students during finals week always seemed like an inescapable fact of college life. It's one of those "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" situations: Everyone goes through the same agonizing, inconvenient process. But flex exams could change all that.
