The average Virginia football fan watched most of the first two games of this season with chagrin as the Cavaliers lost control of the football again and again. Muffed punts, dropped passes, botched options and general bad handling of the ball sent the Cavaliers to two consecutive losses, the first of which was easily avoidable. Most fans were thinking to themselves, "When will this team catch a break?" as they entered Scott Stadium for last night's game with South Carolina.

A h, summer. The beginning of August means many things to the average Charlottesville resident. The start of football practice, students moving into new apartments or just a lazy day to spend at the pool. Mostly, it means that America's national pastime is ready to kick into high gear and captivate the hearts and minds of the country.

As much as it seems like baseball's All-Star game shouldn't matter, there are times when it looks like the spectacle it was originally intended to be. If you can get past the fact that it's an exhibition game played in the middle of a season that players sometimes actually try to miss, the idea of seeing the best take on the best is undeniably riveting. Curt Schilling vs. Ichiro? Done. Mariano Rivera vs. Barry Bonds? Could have happened, if not for some questionable substitution patterns by managers Bob Brenly and Joe Torre. With the best players in the world playing the only game in town, the All-Star game could be one of the best games in all of sports.

With the country's attention focused on the Final Four and the ACC's own Maryland Terrapins, many college sports stories tend to slip through the cracks. One such tale is the upcoming NFL Draft. While Mel Kiper Jr. and his ilk offer up just about the best coverage possible of the pre-draft jockeying - which begs the question, what does Mel do for the rest of the year? - the story of the draft is not just that of Ashley Lelie's speed and the David Carr-Joey Harrington dilemma. One of the best - and most star-crossed - stories in the draft is right here in Charlottesville in Virginia's own Antwoine Womack.

At first glance, the Virginia football team's receiving corps would appear to be of little threat to the defenses of the ACC. Four of the top five pass catchers from last season are gone, including tight end Billy Baber, who is now with the Kansas City Chiefs. Those four receivers combined to catch 91 passes last season.

A look at the win-loss records indicates that the 2000-2001 season was one of the Virginia athletics program's worst in recent memory. The Cavaliers finished 30th in the Sears Directors' Cup standings, down from 13th in 1999-2000 and eighth in 1998-1999. The numbers seem to show a program on the decline. But over the past year, former Director of Athletics Terry Holland and his replacement, Craig Littlepage, have made all the right moves to right the ship.

Few athletes have gone through as much turmoil as point guard Donald Hand. Over the course of his Virginia career, the senior from Paterson, N.J., played for two different coaches, watched the player he was brought in with depart and filled several roles for the men's basketball team. Nonetheless, Hand is one of the most frequently criticized players on the team.
