The Inter-Sorority Council has canceled plans to host house tours in-person Thursday and Friday, per a message obtained by The Cavalier Daily. Instead, chapters will hold house tours virtually Friday — preferences and bid day will both remain in-person this weekend.

Provost Liz Magill is leaving the University to serve as the ninth president of the University of Pennsylvania beginning July 1. Ian Baucom, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will succeed Magill.

Young Democratic Socialists of America at U.Va. hosted a political education event with between 30 and 40 attendees Wednesday in New Cabell Hall to launch its Defund UPD campaign. During the event, activists presented arguments for firing Timothy Longo, chief of the University police department and associate vice president for safety and security, and defunding the University's ambassador program.

After canceling Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn in an Oct. 8 email to Lawn and Range residents, the University offered several volunteering opportunities in place of the event, which typically draws hundreds of community members and families to the Lawn. Students were able to get involved in a number of different ways — from assembling treat bags to helping out with local Halloween festivals at City of Promise and Charlottesville City Schools.

The University’s annual Fire Safety and Security report was released Tuesday morning from Timothy Longo, associate vice president for safety and security and chief of police. The report revealed that almost every type of crime decreased during the three-year period from 2018 to 2020, while three fires in on-Grounds housing caused property damage.

Although many in-person activities were suspended last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, the pandemic also inspired the creation of new CIOs, from Undergraduate Women in Law to Pickleball at U.Va., among others. These clubs have given members a space to meet new friends, find new communities and learn and grow during a long year of isolation.

The Young Democratic Socialists of America at U.Va. shared a petition and open letter criticizing the University’s current COVID-19 protocols Wednesday. The letter’s demands include a semester-long indoor mask mandate, mandatory prevalence testing for all students every two weeks, expansion of contact tracing, modification of class attendance policies and hybrid learning options for students.

New masking guidelines will be in place at the University for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, Provost Liz Magill and Chief Operating Officer J.J. Davis announced in an email sent Friday afternoon. All individuals are required to wear masks indoors on University property — including academic and administrative buildings, libraries, labs, dining halls, IM Rec facilities, and U.Va. Health locations — regardless of vaccination status beginning Monday, Aug. 9.

Former members of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Race, Memorials and Public Spaces are calling on the Charlottesville City Council to immediately cover the statues of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. The statement’s signees include former Chair Don Gathers, former Commissioner John Edwin Mason, Melvin Burruss, Andrea Douglas, Frank Dukes, Susan Lewis, Rachel Lloyd and Jane Smith.

Former Medical student Kieran Bhattacharya was dismissed from the University’s School of Medicine in 2018 as a result of comments he made during a panel on microaggressions. A hearing next week will determine whether the University violated Bhattacharya’s First Amendment right to free speech.

One year ago, U.Va. Survivors released a list of demands addressed to University administration and the University’s Office of Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights focused on increasing University accountability, education and training surrounding sexual assault awareness and prevention on Grounds. Today, U.Va. Survivors is still calling on the University to meet these unmet demands, having noted limited progress over the past 12 months, according to student advocates on Grounds.

Executive Order 77 — which was signed into law March 23 by Gov. Ralph Northam — requires Virginia colleges, universities and state agencies to stop the use, sale and distribution of single-use plastics except for medical or safety reasons. Universities and state agencies have 180 days to submit a plastic pollution reduction plan and must be plastic-free by the end of 2025.

Student Council voted to pass SB21-12, A Bill to Amend the Bylaws to Create a First-Generation Low-Income Advocacy Board, and SB21-13, A Bill to Approve Newly Created Contracted Independent Organizations, at its meeting Tuesday night. SR21-15, A Resolution Condemning the “Cancel Culture” Invading the University of Virginia, did not pass but prompted a debate among representatives and community students.

Student Council released their 2020-2021 fall semester report, which explains their accomplishments throughout the semester as well as their future plans on Feb. 18. The report offers a detailed overview of the Student Council’s workover the last few months. Highlights of the report come from three groups within Student Council — the Presidential Cabinet, the Administration Branch and the Organizations Branch.

Student Council passed two pieces of legislation Tuesday — SR21-10, A Resolution in Support of the Asian Student Union’s Statement Denouncing The Increase in Violence Against the APIDA Community and SB21-11, A Bill to Renew the Ad-Hoc Committee to Support Student Workers. SR21-10 passed with 22 votes in favor and one abstention, while SB21-11 passed with 23 votes in favor.

Student Council voted to pass SR21-09, A Resolution Denouncing The University’s Negligence Regarding IFC and ISC Violations of COVID-19 Restrictions for Recruitment Events, Tuesday. Twenty-three representatives voted in favor of the legislation and two abstained.

The Student Council voted to pass two resolutions Tuesday night — SR21-06, A Resolution in Support of DivestUVA’s letter to the Board of Visitors and President, and SB21-07, A Resolution Denouncing Harassment Against Members of the Student Body. The meeting was also briefly Zoom-bombed by individuals unaffiliated with the University.

In honor of Black History Month, the Office of African-American Affairs will hold a series of events inspired by Alice Randall’s novel “Black Bottom Saints.” The novel tells the stories of 52 individuals, or saints, from Black Bottom, Detroit. These saints include famous figures like Dinah Washington — a jazz and blues singer known as “the most popular Black female recording artist of the 50s’” — and Joe Louis — a professional boxer who was heavyweight champion of the world from 1937 to 1949 — as well as local heroes who embody the spirit of the vibrant neighborhood.
