“Endless Love,” an American romantic drama directed by Shana Feste (“Country Strong,” “The Greatest”) and co-written by Joshua Safran (“Gossip Girl”), is set for a Feb. 14 nationwide release. Starring Alex Pettyfer as David Elliot and Gabriella Wilde as Jade Butterfield, the movie, a remake of Franco Zeffirelli’s 1981 film and an adaptation of Scott Spencer’s novel, is yet another modern take on the tale of star-crossed lovers, with characters swept up in a whirlwind of romance only to face disapproving parents and divisive class boundaries. We sat down with Pettyfer at a virtual roundtable last week along with other participating colleges to ask him about his upcoming project.

After falling into something of a sophomore slump, OneRepublic demonstrated their creativity and skill are as strong as ever with last week’s release of their third album, Native. Though Native is by no means as good as OneRepublic’s debut album, Dreaming Out Loud, it is still a solid effort on frontman Ryan Tedder’s part and a refreshing comeback after a rather disappointing second album.

While Justin Timberlake was busy pursuing a career in acting, I was busy wondering whether or not he’d ever come out with a new album. After a seven-year hiatus, however, he finally released The 20/20 Experience, an album almost worth the wait.

In the four years between Local Natives’ debut album Gorilla Manor and 2013’s Hummingbird, the band noticeably underwent a lot of growth, both musically and emotionally. Gorilla Manor embodied carefree youth, sung with characteristic three-part harmonies reminiscent of the easygoing lightheartedness found only under the warmth of a California sun, whereas Hummingbird is its natural winter counterpart. In Hummingbird, those harmonies the Local Natives used to make a name for themselves are replaced with more solo singing by frontman Kelcey Ayer.

I sometimes find it astounding that a few short minutes of deliberately placed melodic notes and well-chosen words can so easily capture emotions universal to mankind. We often get so caught up in the formulated pop songs thrown at us every time we turn on the radio that we begin to forget the power of music. The Antlers concert at Old Cabell Hall last Saturday served as a reminder that real and completely honest music is still alive and thriving.
