University President Jim Ryan offered brief remarks about his goals and priorities for his time in office and addressed questions from reporters — including about the one-year anniversary of the white nationalist Unite the Right rally and the controversial hiring of March Short at the Miller Center — at the Rotunda Wednesday on his first day in office. He identified three major themes he said would define his presidency — community, discovery and service.

Jason Kessler — the leading white nationalist organizer for the deadly Unite the Right rally last August — withdrew Tuesday afternoon his motion to force the City of Charlottesville to grant him a permit for an anniversary rally on Aug. 12. The judge was set to rule on Kessler’s motion the same afternoon.

Eleven months after the violent white nationalist demonstrations of Aug. 11 and 12 at the University and in downtown Charlottesville, local emergency management officials and police personnel convened at the Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church July 12 to present preliminary plans for managing a potential anniversary rally next month — including improved coordination between law enforcement and emergency management personnel and reformed policing tactics.

Speakers at last week’s meeting of the Charlottesville City Council condemned the response by the City’s police department to a June 8 demonstration protesting the conviction of Corey Long — a counter protester at the Unite the Right rally last August who used an aerosol can as a makeshift flamethrower towards white nationalists shouting racial slurs at him.

Outgoing University President Teresa Sullivan delivered her final remarks as president to the Board of Visitors at the full body meeting of the board earlier this month amidst much applause from board members. The June 8 board meeting was Sullivan’s last one as president of the University as her contract will formally end July 31.

The Charlottesville City Council discussed and debated the merits of implementing a strong-mayor form of government in the City at its meeting Monday night. The discussion ensued after Paul Long — a long-time City resident and former independent candidate for Council — advocated for the transition during the community matters portion of the meeting.

In a contentious 3-2 decision, the Charlottesville City Council appointed seven members to an inaugural police civilian review board at its meeting Monday night. Mayor Nikuyah Walker and Councilor Wes Bellamy casted the dissenting votes in the decision.

The Charlottesville City Council formally appointed Dr. RaShall Brackney — as recommended by City Manager Maurice Jones earlier this month— at its meeting Monday night. Brackney will officially begin her term June 18.

At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Charlottesville City Manager Maurice Jones announced his recommendation for Dr. RaShall Brackney to be the City’s next chief of police. Brackney will be formally appointed at the next Council meeting May 21, and her term as police chief is currently set to begin June 18.

University Architect Alice Raucher delivered an update last Thursday on the planned demolition of University Hall and discussed the Athletics Master Plan with the Planning and Coordination Council Technical Committee at the Albemarle County Office Building. The University Board of Visitors will consider formal approval of the demolition plans at its Executive Committee meeting Friday.

The Charlottesville City Council held a preliminary discussion Monday evening about an amended ordinance to establish a City land bank corporation as part of a long term effort by the Council to address the City’s ongoing affordable housing crisis. The City currently has $20 million allocated towards the development of affordable housing in the next five years.

The Virginia Young Democrats hosted a dialogue session at CitySpace Sunday in which panelists discussed social justice in Charlottesville and throughout Virginia. Panelists included Del. Chris Hurst (D-Blacksburg), Jennifer Bowles — a Martinsville City Councilor and University alumnus — and Zyahna Bryant, a Charlottesville high school student and local activist.

The Charlottesville City Council adopted an ordinance Monday night to transfer ownership of Brandon Avenue to the University — without requiring any formal compensation — which will support U.Va.’s plans to redevelop the area with a “green street,” upperclassmen student housing and a remodeled student health center. The measure passed in a 4-1 vote with Mayor Nikuyah Walker casting a dissenting vote.

The Charlottesville City Council heard and discussed the implications of a police department report last Monday which detailed the racial breakdown of stop and frisk statistics in the City in 2017. According to the report, 91 individuals out of 125 investigative detention stop incidents during 2017 which included search or frisk operations were African American, while 33 were white. 31 individuals out of 48 investigative detention stops which did not involve a search or frisk operation, were African American while 16 were white.

The University hosted a conference on housing justice and affordability at City Space Saturday to allow for a wide variety of experts on housing policy from the local community and around the country to discuss the issue of affordable housing in Charlottesville. The event was funded by the Provost’s 2017-18 Flash Fund for projects toward “Achieving the Culture and Environment We Value.”

Both the Minority Rights Coalition and the Jewish Leadership Council at the University issued statements on Facebook Friday stating that the MRC will reconsider potential membership status for the JLC as a voting member of the MRC board. The JLC was originally denied full membership and voting status as an organization of the MRC after the board voted against membership for the JLC Feb. 25.
