Rep. Tom Garrett — the Republican congressman representing Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District, which includes Charlottesville and Albemarle County — announced Monday he would not run in the 2018 midterm elections. In a video statement, he said he has struggled with alcoholism and needs to focus on recovery and spending time with his family.

After The Daily Progress published an article Friday reporting that three prominent bars on the Corner — Boylan Heights, the Biltmore and The Virginian — require University student identification cards for admission after 11 p.m. along with a state-issued identification proving the individual is of legal drinking age, the bars’ owners have published statements claiming the bars do not have rules against nonstudents.

Charlottesville Mayor Nikuyah Walker announced Friday afternoon after a closed-door meeting of City councilors that City Manager Maurice Jones will not be returning to his role when his contract ends Dec. 7. Jones has held the title of city manager for eight years.

At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Charlottesville City Manager Maurice Jones announced his recommendation for Dr. RaShall Brackney to be the City’s next chief of police. Brackney will be formally appointed at the next Council meeting May 21, and her term as police chief is currently set to begin June 18.

Bruce Kothmann was confronted by two University Police Department officers Tuesday afternoon for reading a passage from the Bible on the steps of the Rotunda without a permit. He was interrupted halfway through Isaiah 40, Kothmann said, but it’s not a big deal. He had told the University Counsel’s office in advance he’d be there. He said he just wanted to make a point.

Michael Gibson, chief of the University Police Department, will be retiring this summer, according to an announcement from U.Va. issued Wednesday evening. Gibson has worked with UPD since 1982, starting as a patrol officer, then as a general investigator, narcotics investigator, sergeant and shift commander. He was appointed interim police chief in October 2005 and was instated permanently in January 2007.

Indivisible Charlottesville — a regional branch of an activism group aiming to “oppose the Trump agenda,” — drew a crowd of nearly 100 to the Downtown Mall Monday evening to protest Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam’s support for the proposed Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast pipelines. The two natural gas pipelines would both pass through mountainous regions of southwestern Virginia and West Virginia and are both supposed to be in service by 2019.

The University released changes Friday afternoon to its rules for speakers on Grounds, mandating “unaffiliated persons” — anyone not currently employed or enrolled at the University — make reservations for one of nine specific locations before engaging in “public speaking” or the distribution of literature on University property. University alumni are included as unaffiliated persons.

The University issued a trespass warning to Jason Kessler, a white nationalist and organizer of the “Unite the Right” rally last August, for reports of threats and harassment, according to an email statement Friday morning. The warning prohibits Kessler from entering University property.

University Law Prof. Anne Coughlin is working with two students to encourage a trespass warning and “burning objects” charge against organizers — including white nationalist Jason Kessler — of a torchlit rally on Grounds prior to last August’s deadly Unite the Right rally. The trespass warning would be issued by the University, while the criminal charge would be investigated by University Police Department detectives and prosecuted by Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Tracci.

A plane crash Sunday evening in western Albemarle County ended with the death of the pilot — positively identified Wednesday afternoon by the Office of the Medical Examiner as Kent Carr, a 51-year-old resident of Staunton, Va. The crash occurred around 9 p.m. off Saddle Hollow Road near Crozet.

Jason Kessler, a white nationalist and organizer of the deadly Unite the Right rally last August, is being sued by Charlottesville City resident James Taylor for assault, defamation and malicious prosecution, among other claims. This is the latest proceeding in Kessler’s legal battle after punching Taylor on the Downtown Mall last January.
