City Council voted unanimously Monday to confirm Michael Kochis as the new chief of police for the City of Charlottesville. Kochis was selected by acting city manager Michael Rogers out of three potential candidates to fill the position. Kochis currently serves as chief of police in Warrenton and will take over for acting chief Latroy Durrette beginning Jan. 16.

Members of LGBTQ+ and progressive Law student organizations have expressed concerns over a Tuesday event sponsored by the Federalist Society at the School of Law. The event will feature Erin Hawley, senior counsel for the Alliance Defending Freedom — a Southern Poverty Law Center-classified anti-LGBTQ+ hate group.

Charlottesville City Council began preparing the budget for the 2024 fiscal year during Monday’s meeting. During this session, Council gave general feedback on aspects of the budget, including the public hearing schedule and Vibrant Community Fund considerations.

At Monday's business meeting Council members opened the floor to public comment regarding two issues — a new bridge over Emmet Street and an amended collective bargaining ordinance. Council voted unanimously to approve both measures.

The University’s Echols Scholar Program welcomed Assoc. Religious Studies Prof. Karl Shuve as the newest director this year. Shuve’s term follows Astronomy Prof. Kelsey Johnson, who served as director of the Echols program from 2017 to 2022.

As students return to Grounds ready for the fall semester, they may notice more of their friends and colleagues starting the semester with a cough, or maybe even a fever — common symptoms of COVID-19. Despite more than 95 percent of students being vaccinated, COVID-19 remains a concern among students, even as the University has scaled back certain accommodations such as the amount of on-Grounds isolation beds and testing availability.

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library is currently featuring an exhibit entitled “No Unity without Justice” exploring the community and student activist response to the events of August 2017. The exhibit opened Aug. 8 and will remain open through Oct. 29, and is displayed on the first floor of the Special Collections Library. It features artifacts and stories collected by students, community members and staff.

Planned Parenthood Generation Action hosted a virtual event Monday for University community members to ask questions regarding the recent Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade — the 1973 Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion across the nation — and the future of abortion access and activism.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University celebrated its 20th anniversary Sunday. By hosting a private event to honor the members and volunteers who have worked tirelessly within the nonprofit. The institute provides older individuals in the Charlottesville area with access to continuing education.

The Audit, Compliance and Risk Committee of the Board of Visitors convened Thursday to discuss the proposed two-year audit plan and the previous year’s audit. The Board also heard an overview of the work of the Academic Division’s Enterprise Risk Management, which identifies and manages areas of heightened risk for the University such as fraud and security breaches and compliance with endowment regulations.

Summer study abroad programs, which provide students with opportunities to visit different countries and partake in exciting experiences while learning important skills, have recently become available for University students for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic halted operations in 2020.

Charlottesville City Council convened in City Council chambers for its meeting Monday to discuss climate action and potential amendments to the Community Development Block Grant process as well as hear a presentation on tax relief from School of Law students. This was the first meeting with an in-person component since the COVID-19 pandemic began two years ago.
