Tensions between Israel and Palestine escalated this summer, with intermittent periods of rocketfire and unsteady ceasefire on the border between the two sides. University students have taken a great interest in the conflict, and a number of student groups are promoting further discussion and advocacy on the issue.

At its Tuesday night meeting, just weeks after the newest executive committee was sworn in, Student Council passed a landmark resolution in regards to sexual misconduct at the University. The Sexual Misconduct Awareness, Recovery, and Tangible resolution, or SMART, offers proposals to raise awareness and offer resources to survivors by working with both student groups and University administrators. Seven clauses outline changes to student education, involvement and administrative action.

Randall Moorman, a cardiologist and professor of medicine, physiology and biomedical engineering at the University, was honored as the 2014 Edlich-Henderson Innovator of the Year Tuesday, recognizing his work on early diagnosis of infection in premature infants.

This past fall, the Fourth Year 5K had more than 930 registrants, all able to enjoy the nice weather along with guests like Cav Man and Dean of Students Allen Groves. University President Teresa Sullivan recognized the fourth-year winners of the event at the home football game that night. During the event, meanwhile, participants are provided with statistics and information about low-risk drinking through a combination of games and merchandise.

The families of Morgan Harrington and Alexis Murphy, two young women who have tragically gone missing from the surrounding areas, met this weekend in Albemarle County to exchange support and hope for the safe return of Murphy to her family. Harrington’s body was found three months after she disappeared in 2009 after coming to Charlottesville for a Metallica concert, and Murphy went missing earlier this summer and has yet to be found
