Alex Cintron, a fourth-year College student and Student Council president, began Tuesday evening’s Student Council general body meeting with a moment of silence for the 11 victims of a massacre at a synagogue in Pittsburgh Saturday, when an armed gunman opened fire on a Jewish congregation. Student Council went on to unanimously pass a resolution stating its support for the Jewish community both at the University and worldwide.

During the Student Council general body meeting Tuesday night, University Police Department Chief Tommye Sutton described his plan to improve the relationship between UPD and the student body. The plan includes increasing police transparency, engaging with the students on Grounds and including students in the hiring process for future UPD officers.

Student Council approved its annual 2018-19 budget of $72,000 as well as a new Contracted Independent Organization during its legislative session Tuesday evening. The budget passed with a vote of 25 in favor, one against and two abstentions.

Student Council representatives debated their proposed 2018-19 annual budget — which allocates a total of $72,039 — during the budget session at their meeting Oct. 2. Following approximately 20 minutes of discussion, the representatives voted to table the budget. Student Council will reconvene the Tuesday after fall break for a final vote.

At its general body meeting Tuesday evening, Student Council unanimously approved the creation an ad-hoc committee to plan the upcoming 2019 AL1GN conference. AL1GN stands for the Alliance for the Low Income and First Generation Narrative, a student movement and nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering and connecting low-income and first-generation students nationwide.

Student Council and Madison House began a joint project this week to provide free menstrual hygiene products to students off-Grounds. The products will be available in the first floor bathrooms of Madison House until Sept. 21, or while supplies last.

The Student Council Representative Body unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday at its general body meeting urging University faculty to refrain from scheduling exams on Election Day this year, which will be Tuesday, Nov. 6. The resolution was introduced by Student Council’s Legislative Affairs Committee.

Student Council unanimously passed a bill to adjust the allowed uses of Student Activity Fee funds during its first meeting of the semester Tuesday evening. The $50 Student Activity Fee is a mandatory fee students pay, which supports Student Council’s funding of the activities of Contracted Independent Organizations.

As the University’s Class of 2018 prepares to walk down the Lawn for Final Exercises and to proceed into their future, some will continue their education at graduate school. The University Career Center’s most recent data is for the class of 2017 and reveals that 14.6 percent of the class of 2017 pursued higher education as their first destination after graduation.

Author Patricia Hampl delivered a guest lecture last Tuesday about her new book, “The Art of the Wasted Day.” Hampl is an English professor at the University of Minnesota, where she teaches creative writing. Forty-five people gathered in a classroom in Nau Hall to hear her speak.

Members of the Jewish community at the University gathered on Lambeth Field Friday afternoon for IsraelFest, a celebration of Israeli culture. The event was co-hosted by the Jewish Leadership Council, Hoos for Israel and the Brody Jewish Center and included food, music, dance, artwork and a live camel.

The City of Charlottesville hosted a community budget forum Wednesday to elicit public feedback on the City Manager's proposed budget for the 2019 fiscal year. The City is currently in the process of developing the FY19 budget which will begin in July.

In response to last month’s school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. which resulted in the death of 17 people, the Minority Rights Coalition hosted a march to end gun violence starting in the University Amphitheater Wednesday evening. Despite cold temperatures, a crowd of over a hundred congregated in the amphitheater in solidarity to listen to speeches from local and University students.
