As an English and Religious Studies double major, I frequently have to navigate the “what on earth are you going to do with that degree?” question. There has been a fair amount of debate over what can be “done” with an English major, but today I would like to give a glimpse into the wonders of being a Religious Studies major.

Nestled underneath the Student Health Center is a newly renovated Student Disability Access Center — a place full of people who work every day to make sure all students, regardless of disability, have the opportunity to succeed at the University.

I do not need to rehash the events of this semester for anyone. It has been difficult for all of us. But as it comes to an end, I am left with newfound admiration for the type of people in our student body.

The bystander effect describes the human tendency to remain uninvolved in a crisis, with the assumption someone else will intervene. Documented across psychology literature, the effect is something several student groups are working to combat.

Saturday marked the start of International Education Week, a national initiative the State Department and the Department of Education first implemented in 2000. The week was first recognized at the University three years ago, and is presented annually to explore what makes the University a global institution.

Coffee didn’t leave a good first impression on me. When I was first introduced to it as a child, it left a bitter taste in my mouth. But once I grew up a bit, I realized coffee wasn’t all that bad.

Thousands of recent graduates will gather in the Amphitheatre Saturday night for a chance to recapture their college nights at the Corner and down Rugby Road. The party, also known as Young Alumni Reunions, is a part of the Young Alumni Council’s efforts to keep recent graduates coming back to Charlottesville and reconnecting with old friends.

It was a rainy morning on the first day back from Fall Break. I had a midterm in my first class. I hadn’t done nearly enough work during the weekend, because let’s face it, no one is ever actually productive during “reading days.” But as I was walking home from class with my midterm behind me, I decided to do something new.

Corks and Curls, the University yearbook founded in 1888, will return to Grounds this year after being discontinued for financial reasons in 2009. Funded by generous alumni donations, third-year College student Carly Buckholz and third-year Engineering student Michael Buhl will lead a team of students dedicated to revitalizing the publication.

Alas, I have made the inevitable first trek of the year down to first-floor Clemons. Countless students have come here before me, giving up hours of their lives reading, writing, calculating and, of course, procrastinating.

I have spent the past week unpacking and settling into my third residence since moving to Charlottesville. Every year, a part of that settling in includes making a photo wall with a plethora of mismatched pictures I have accumulated. When I arrived as a first year, this was filled entirely with nostalgic high school pictures — but this year, I realized the wall is overwhelmingly filled with pictures of friends from college and the fun things we have done during our first two years here.

Armed with neon shirts and smiles, a group of students show up to Grounds early each August to volunteer as greeters. These individuals are the first source of support new students enjoy at the University, helping them transport their belongings from the street to their dorm rooms and minimizing move-in day chaos.

As a part of my Erasmus — what they call study abroad over here in Ireland — I am interning at a magazine. As an English major and Cavalier Daily writer, I initially felt prepared for the job initially. But in the weeks since I started, I have come to realize there are many things even Mr. Jefferson’s university is unable to prepare us for.

On Monday I arrived in Dublin, Ireland — my home for the next two months. As my flight was landing, I looked out the window to see countless blades of green grass. The Irish woman sitting next to me tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Welcome to Ireland.”

The other day, I was sitting at a restaurant with someone — who for the sake of this article I will call Bob — and our waitress came over to greet us. We placed our drink orders and then continued to look at the menu to decide what to eat.
