People often complain about the overuse of the word “love” and how this leads to the loss of the weight it’s supposed to carry – and this is probably true. But it’s the word “friend” I think has gone through a similar, if not worse, transformation into meaninglessness.

I am a chronic eavesdropper. As a result, when I am trying to work I need extreme quiet. Just 10 years ago, the idea for the annual Pancakes for Parkinson’s fundraiser emerged out of one University student’s admissions essay. Through an innumerable quantity of pancakes — chocolate chip and blueberry included — the organization has since been recognized as an official “Team Fox” fundraiser by the Michael J. Fox Foundation and has spread to dozens of other schools. Nationally, the fundraisers have collectively raised more than a million dollars for Parkinson’s research.

The concept of karma has always interested me, but I’ve never actually thought it existed. Sure, bad things are bound to happen sooner or later if you are a terrible person or constantly in a bad mood, but that’s hardly a law of religion — much less a scientific one.

The word “tradition” is one that carries a lot of weight at this University. Students hear about it time and time again, from the beginning of orientation to the day of graduation. But at a school with almost 200 years of history, tradition is nebulous idea — many have come and gone, while others have lasted through the ages.

Everyone has days when it feels Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day” is playing on repeat in the background — I can’t be the only one who still appreciates that song. But even if you don’t share my love of that song, everybody knows what it feels like to have a day in which nothing goes your way.

Working as a camp counselor this summer, I was reacquainted with how children view the world. After countless “Stop butting me!” cries and “But he started it!” exclamations, I began to reflect on the days when my biggest worry was whether I was first or second in line for a minute-long walk down the hallway. There was no need to stress about which classes to take or remembering to pay rent, and nobody was asking me, “What are you going to do with an English major?”

To hear the Office of Admissions tell it, each successive class attending the University seems more impressive than the last. But even beyond the always rising average SAT scores and ever-climbing GPAs, students entering the University boast a myriad of accomplishments.
