Virginia traveled Tuesday to face off against perennial powerhouse No. 4 Connecticut in an early season test for the Cavaliers. Virginia (2-3, 0-0 ACC), struggled to limit the offensive efficiency of Connecticut (4-0, 0-0 AAC), while the Huskies locked down Virginia’s scoring efforts.

No. 6 Virginia traveled to Winston-Salem Friday and defeated No. 20 Wake Forest 3-1 to end the regular season. Virginia (15-3, 4-2 ACC) won thanks to brilliant scoring efforts by freshman back Cato Geusgens and freshman striker Laura Janssen, while the Demon Deacons (8-10, 0-6 ACC) struggled offensively.

Virginia men’s soccer, in the middle of a standout season, is full of talented athletes motivated to win. However, junior midfielder Beau Bradley’s competitive spirit comes from a source different from most of his teammates — his family’s deep-rooted tradition of hard work and athletic dominance. The Bradley family name is synonymous with many celebrated American sports figures including professional baseball players, a professional soccer coach and a captain of the United States men’s national soccer team.

In the second weekend of ACC play, Virginia faced its toughest opponent yet. The No. 5 Cavaliers (8-2, 1-1 ACC) lost 5-0 against undefeated No. 1 North Carolina (9-0, 2-0 ACC) in Charlottesville Friday, but bounced back from the loss with a 3-1 win Sunday against Longwood (4-4, 1-0 Big South) in Farmville, Va.

The No. 11 Virginia field hockey team continued its hot play coming off of a weekend in which it beat Old Dominion and Penn State. The Cavaliers (4-0, 0-0 ACC) beat UMass-Lowell (1-2, 0-0 America East) and No. 14 Ohio State (3-1, 0-0 Big Ten) in back-to-back showdowns that highlight the depth and all-around strength of this year’s squad.

The 2018 season was a rocky campaign for Virginia, as the Cavaliers were never able to overcome an uncharacteristically slow start. The season ended with an early exit from the NCAA Tournament. However, with a promising cohort of incoming freshmen and a talented roster still at Coach Michele Madison’s disposal, the No. 11 Cavaliers are expected to be a contender in the ACC.

There are 37.9 seconds left, and then-No. 1 Virginia is trailing Louisville by two points on the road. Then-freshman forward De’Andre Hunter drives down the baseline, passing the first defender with a quick sidestep as another approaches to cut off his drive. They make contact as Hunter attempts to convert the basket, and the whistle blows. For a second, the KFC Yum! Center is silent as Louisville fans hold their breath. Then comes the call. Offensive foul, Louisville ball. The crowd erupts in cheers, and the Cardinals appear to be poised for a huge upset victory.
