Women created 36.1% of published media in the United States in 2014, according to the year’s Women’s Media Center’s “Status of Women in the US Media Report”. Only 14.6 percent of those who work in the American sports media are women. Females continue to try to push past this gender gap. However, the field of sports journalism does not currently provide equal opportunities or treatment for women in many cases, with labor practices often furthering a male dominated hegemony. It is hard to break into the field as a woman — and even harder to be taken seriously. Many don’t want to join the fight to help bring the percentage beyond 14.6 percent because of the constant questioning of credibility based on gender.

The Virginia football team (0-1) suffered its first loss of the season Saturday in the Rose Bowl against No. 13 UCLA (1-0), 34-16. Coach Mike London stated, “The challenge is always getting better for us as a football team. … We have opportunities to correct things. … We have opportunities to talk about the things that can put you in positions to be positive on plays and those things that cost us during the course of this game.”

There are a lot of significant aspects of Virginia culture, and sports are an important part. When people across the country think of the University of Virginia, they don’t just think of the outstanding academics or Thomas Jefferson. More and more people are quick to recognize Virginia for its widespread success in sports. This past season, Virginia won national titles in men’s tennis, men’s soccer and baseball (as well as Ryan Shane’s men’s tennis singles national title), a women’s soccer College Cup appearance and, for much of the year, a top-5 men’s basketball team). The Cavaliers won the Capital One Cup in men’s sports — an award given out at the EPSYs for the most successful and dominant college sports programs.

The past four years for the seniors on the Virginia’s field hockey team have been filled with glorious wins, outrageous upsets, tough losses, uphill battles and enduring friendships. Just when senior midfielder Kelsey LeBlanc and senior goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone thought that their collegiate careers had come to an end, they learned that together, they had earned one more honor: being selected to play in the Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division I Senior All-Star game.

Trick or Treating on the lawn is a UVa tradition established by students in the 1980s. Candy donated by student groups is distributed from each of the 54 lawn rooms as students, faculty, and community members gather on the lawn in a huge variety of costumes.

A new peer review system for determining faculty salary increases will take effect in paychecks this month, following a proposal by University President Teresa Sullivan that was implemented in July. Faculty merit raises will now be determined by reviews from other faculty in the same department, rather than exclusively by department chairs.
