After nearly two months since its last meet, the Virginia swimming and diving teams entered Christiansburg, Va. prepared for six dual-meets over a two-day meet. The final results were indicative of their strenuous winter preparations, as the teams took five of six duals.

When a heralded recruiting class comes together, it is customary for many of the top recruits to meet and perhaps share a dinner the summer before they arrive on a campus. But the three headline recruits for the Virginia 2013 women’s swimming and diving class — freshmen Leah Smith, Laura Simon and Kaitlyn Jones — shared a particularly memorable experience during the summer when they traveled together to Germany to watch the FINA Swimming World Cup.

The Virginia swimming and diving teams battled against three of the top teams in the country Friday and Saturday at the Aquatic & Fitness Center. The No. 9 Cavalier men beat West Virginia 241-111 but lost to No. 1 Texas, 225-128, and No. 24 Penn State, 191-162. Meanwhile, the No. 11 women team defeated West Virginia, 288-50, and No. 24 Penn State, 226-127, but lost to No. 9 Texas, 196-57.

For 35 years coach Mark Bernardino confidently walked the Virginia poolside, orchestrating the Cavalier swimming and diving teams’ unprecedented march to 27 ACC Championships. But this past July, to the shock of many in the swimming community, Bernardino suddenly retired, creating a coaching vacancy at one of the most storied programs in the conference.

After a tumultuous start to the season, including losses in three of its first four games, No. 14 Virginia (7-3-4, 3-2-4 ACC) has rebounded and is riding a 10-game unbeaten streak after a 2-0 upset against No. 8 Notre Dame Saturday. The win boosted not only the Cavaliers’ rankings, but also their confidence moving forward.

Last season, junior tight end Jake McGee emerged as a star and fan favorite with acrobatic and game winning catches. As the season progressed, it became apparent that his production was imperative to Virginia’s success.

In the past decade, Virginia football has cemented a tradition of producing dominant offensive tackles for the National Football League. With notable alumni such as D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Eugene Monroe, Branden Albert and Oday Aboushi, most freshmen offensive tackles temper their expectations for immediate playing time for the Cavaliers, making true freshman tackle Eric Smith’s start Saturday against Ball State all the more impressive.

Three weeks ago, freshman linebacker Max Valles was just another name along the Virginia sideline, watching in awe of Oregon’s hypersonic offense. Fast forward to last Saturday and Valles is the Cavaliers’ starting outside linebacker, leading the team with 2.5 sacks against a potent Pittsburgh offense. His immediate success has stunned Virginia’s fan base, but even Valles himself is surprised by his quick ascension up the depth chart.

Virginia earned its first ACC win on Saturday in a 2-0 victory against new member Syracuse in the Cavaliers’ fourth conference match of the season. Though the players certainly would have preferred a faster start to the season, they understand that results are difficult to come by given the high level of play in the ACC.

Through the first two games of the season, the Virginia offense has struggled. Sophomore quarterback David Watford has thrown four interceptions and only one touchdown, and the Cavaliers have managed just 2.9 yards per rushing attempt.
