The Virginia women's lacrosse redeemed its tough conference loss against Maryland March 4 by defeating another of the four ACC programs in the national top 10, North Carolina. In their most dominating performance of the season, the No. 2 Cavaliers controlled possession for much of the game against the No. 7 Tar Heels.

The Virginia women's lacrosse team is coming off an in-state victory against William & Mary while looking to carry its momentum into ACC play. The Cavaliers defeated the Tribe Wednesday night in Williamsburg in a close battle, 14-11. They now look towards a matchup with perennial ACC power North Carolina Sunday at Klöckner Stadium.

The Virginia women's lacrosse team had its ups and downs over three Spring Break games. It began its run by knocking off No. 4 Syracuse 13-8. Leading the Cavaliers was junior midfielder Blair Weymouth with five goals in her first game back from an ankle injury. Also adding to the Cavaliers' offense was sophomore midfielder Brittany Kalkstein, with four goals, and junior midfielder Ashley McCulloch, with four assists.

Coming off of a 14-6 season-opening victory in Blacksburg last Wednesday against rival Virginia Tech, the No. 2 Virginia women's lacrosse team (1-0, 1-0 ACC) is setting its sights on today's game at Richmond as well as three matches week.

As does any college sports program, the Virginia women's lacrosse team lost a few key players from last year's national championship runner-up squad. At the same time, however, the Cavaliers can expect veteran players to step up into leadership roles and new players to contribute toward the accomplishment of the team's goals. All the ingredients to make another run through the ACC and NCAA tournaments could be at hand.

There is an athletic team at Virginia that has won two consecutive ACC Championships, played for last year's national championship and returns an All-American and National Rookie of the Year from last year's team. That team is women's lacrosse.

The Virginia men's basketball team made a strong run last year, unbearably losing on a rimmed-out 3-pointer to Tennessee in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Fast forward to this season and the question of how this year's team would look. It was obvious that starters Jason Cain and co-captain J.R. Reynolds would not be back after graduation. There also was a scare throughout Charlottesville when then-junior Sean Singletary declared for the NBA draft. Luckily for Cavs fans, Sean decided to return for his senior season, and experienced big men senior Ryan Pettinella and junior Laurynas Mikalauskas skillfully took over the position vacated by Cain. But who was going to take the starting position left by Reynolds?

The Virginia men's basketball team began Thanksgiving break with a home victory over Drexel University last Tuesday night. Then they headed to the historic Palestra in Philadelphia for the weekend to participate in the Philly Hoop Group Classic. The Cavaliers began the tournament with a win over the University of Pennsylvania; however, their encore performance was a loss at the hands of Seton Hall University. Now they look forward to returning to John Paul Jones Arena tonight and facing Northwestern University.
