Last year the University implemented a smoking policy meant to reduce the effects of secondhand smoke. The policy states that "smoking is prohibited inside facilities owned or leased by the University and in University-owned vehicles." The policy goes further, stating that smoking is also "prohibited in any outside area adjacent to a facility whose configuration and/or other physical conditions allow smoke either to enter and affect the internal environment or to unduly affect the environment of those entering or exiting the facility."

THE CHARLOTTESVILLE Transit System recently took steps to improve public transportation within the city of Charlottesville. THE PERIOD immediately following World War II was a time of great possibility for the United States. After the victory over Germany and Japan, anything seemed possible and the future held great potential. Overshadowed by the increasingly dire situation in Iraq, the conflict in the East African nation of Somalia has quietly provided the United States with perhaps its greatest success in the War on Terror. Just a few months ago, Islamic militants were quickly taking over the country and were threatening to provide Al-Qaeda with a new safe haven in a strategically important part of the world. Alarmed by the growth of Islamic extremism in Somalia, the United States encouraged and helped the neighboring country of Ethiopia to invade Somalia and fight the extremists. The ensuing war, which lasted from Dec. 20 of last year to roughly the first days of this year, resulted in a complete victory for Ethiopian troops and a complete defeat for the Islamic extremists. Currently, though violence still exists in Somalia, the United Nations backed transitional government is starting to exert more control over the country and the Islamic extremists are in shambles.

IT IS THAT time of the year again. No, not time to get drunk and have fun as the title might suggest, but election time at the University. Over the next few weeks, the top elected student positions for the University will be chosen by student popular vote. That means an endless supply of new Facebook groups and that guy from your econ discussion telling you, "Hey, I was in your economics discussion, vote for me!"
