American novelist James Salter has returned to the University this fall as the inaugural Kapnick Distinguished Writer-in-Residence. Salter was previously at the University for a week-long stint as a Rea Visiting Writer in 1991.

Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, a Republican, and his wife Maureen were found guilty Thursday of corruption charges. The jury found that the couple had accepted nearly $170,000 in gifts and loans from Jonnie Williams — former CEO of the dietary supplements company Star Scientific — in exchange for promoting one of his products.

Recent University alumnus Brendan Wynn, along with 75 other students, faculty and administrators, sent a letter last Tuesday to Attorney General Mark Herring, urging the commonwealth to extend same-sex partner benefits to public employees in Virginia. Virginia law currently does not permit state-provided health insurance benefits for same-sex domestic partners.

Details regarding 2015 Final Exercises were announced in an email sent Friday to the Class of 2015 by Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer Patricia Lampkin. There will be two Final Exercises ceremonies, with graduate and undergraduate College students scheduled to walk the Lawn Saturday, May 16 and students enrolled in all other schools scheduled to walk Sunday, May 17.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe exercised his right to veto a state bill for the first time Wednesday on House Bill 962. The bill would have clarified existing legislation about guns stored in motor vehicles when the owner does not have a concealed weapons permit. It stipulated that the guns must be in “secured” containers, such as glove compartments or consoles, but not necessarily locked containers. McAuliffe’s objection to the bill was that not requiring the containers be locked presented a public safety risk.
