Student Council’s general body passed a resolution Tuesday in support of House Bill 747, a bill which would allow undocumented immigrants to receive in-state tuition provided they meet certain requirements. Council’s resolution addressed the concerns and general support of various student groups.
Every spring, the University accepts approximately 700 transfer students, a select group of students from widely varying backgrounds. In the fall, the new Wahoos join the university community along with incoming first-years, but these students took a different path to Charlottesville. Transfer students undergo a unique application process before taking their place in the student body alongside four-year students.
With student elections just one week away, the University Board of Elections is finalizing preparations, while candidates’ campaigns are in full swing.
The University Board of Visitors is set to vote on the approval of a Masters in Data Sciences program during this week’s meeting. The program, which will be housed in the College, will be discussed in during the Education Policy Committee meeting Thursday afternoon before going to the full Board Friday afternoon.
The Honor Committee repealed its decision made February 9 to place a question on the student elections ballot that would gauge student opinion on non-proctored exams. The Committee will conduct a survey instead.
Politics Prof. Larry Sabato announced he will no longer teach his introductory course in American politics – PLAP 1010 – after this semester. Sabato said the decision was in part personal and in part related to Politics Department staffing concerns.
Ernest Mead, a renowned music professor and former University student, passed away early Thursday evening from congestive heart failure. Mead, a member of the class of 1940, was 95.
The Batten School announced the hiring of Econ Profs. Issac Mbiti and Jay Shimshack during the past two weeks. The two will join the Batten School’s 39 faculty members.
The University was named Tuesday as the No. 2 Peace Corp volunteer-producing university in the nation, with 44 alumni currently volunteering in the program. The University has consistently been in the Peace Corps’ top rankings for recruitment.

As President Barack Obama announced the formation of a task force in January to address the recent increase in sexual assaults on campuses, the University was already in the final stretch of planning the conference, “Dialogue at UVA: Sexual Misconduct Among College Students,” through the efforts of President Teresa Sullivan and Patricia Lampkin, vice president and chief student affairs officer.
The Honor Committee voted 18-3 Sunday evening to place a non-binding resolution on the student elections ballot asking whether students would prefer non-proctored exams. Five members of the Committee were absent and the Chair did not vote.
U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education awarded the Curry School a $1 million dollar grant for their program “Leaders for Tomorrow’s Children.” The program looks to improve graduate-level education in early childhood education and development.
College of Arts and Sciences Dean Meredith Woo addressed an audience of students, faculty and administrators about the state of the College on Friday in Old Cabell Hall.
University officials have established search committees to find replacements for Dean Meredith Woo of the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Dean Harry Harding of the Batten School for Public Policy and Dean Kim Tanzer of the Architecture School. All three deans will not seek reappointment when their terms end in the next several months.
The Virginia House Higher Education subcommittee tabled a bill last Tuesday which would give students attending public institutions the right to legal counsel when appearing before student-run judicial panels.
