UVa Orthopaedic Center ranked among the best in the nation

National health care publication “Becker’s Hospital Review” recognized the University Medical Center’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery on its 2014 list, “125 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Orthopaedic Programs.” The review noted that the orthopaedic surgery departments honored “provide outstanding patient care, advance cutting-edge orthopaedic research and treat professional athletes.” The University Medical Center previously earned recognition for orthopaedic excellence from U.S.

Study examines facial expression response

A new study published by Asst. Psychology Prof. Tobias Grossmann and his colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences has found that seven-month-old infants can pick up on social cues conveyed through the eyes.

A new way to detect ovarian cancer

Tampons could help detect early-stage ovarian cancer, according to a pilot study led by a University medical researcher in collaboration with colleagues at Johns Hopkins University and University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Health System's UPSTART program honored for improving heart attack care

The American College of Cardiology recently recognized the University of Virginia Health System (UHS) for its excellence in care for patients with a certain type of heart attack called a ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). This deadly type of heart attack is caused by prolonged blockage of blood supply to the heart, and can be identified as a light peak on the ST segment of an electrocardiogram.

Shrinking Shorelines

Thinking about the future impacts of rising sea levels can conjure images of submerged streets in Manhattan, as the land barriers no longer contain the Atlantic. While not nearly this catastrophic, the rising sea levels predicted by current data could still prove very detrimental over the next 100 years. Dr. Karen McGlathery of the University’s Marine Ecology Lab leads a particular investigation of the impacts of rising sea levels on coastal wetlands in Virginia.

TWHOLA hosts week of mental health

Last week, the University chapter of To Write Love on Her Arms put on a series of events as part of National Suicide Prevention Week. Though these ranged from a factual presentation from the University Counseling and Psychological Services to a table on the Lawn where students could write down their greatest fears and dreams, they all carried many of the same messages. The most prominent was that the best thing students can do to improve mental health is just to be good to themselves and to others.

When Paolo D’Odorico, professor of environmental sciences, decided to satisfy his hunger to learn about the future of global food trade, he was intrigued by the results of his research. He projected that the current global food trade will not sustain the global population indefinitely, in addition to a startling rise in global food trade in recent years.
