Pet project not so "Noble"

Notwithstanding the two hilarious puns in the title, I am shocked and outraged at the mysterious and dark machinations of our student government that have conspired to select a University dog without any consultation of, or consideration for, the thoughts and opinions of the student body (?Student Council transfers power to Nelson administration yesterday,? 3/24/2009). In an unprecedented act of corruption and nepotism, Matt Schrimper made one giant leap towards the authoritarian regime we all feared Student Council was aspiring for.My question is simply this: at a University where we hold student self-governance in the highest regard, and revere the voice of the common man (as lowly as he may be), and in a year where we see record voter turnout, how can an act that so blatantly reaffirms the common student?s meaninglessness be tolerated?

Respect for women

As a fourth year, I?ve had plenty of time to watch the various comic controversies in The Cavalier Daily but have never been compelled to give my own opinion on the subject.

No more fun at Foxfield

The article in the 3/24 edition of the Cavalier Daily mentioning new rules for Foxfield is very infuriating.

Understanding economics

As a candidate for a distinguished major in economics, I found your publication of Daniel Colbert?s column (?Opening up economics,? 3/24/2009) on the supposed failings of my discipline unfortunate. His poor understanding of how undergraduate economics is taught at the University is a disservice to readers.

As a student, I am always pleased to see other members of the community (or from farther reaches of the world) visiting the Grounds to tour the beauty of the University.

A poor choice of words

Amelia Meyer?s column (?A Poor Choice,? 3/17/09) criticized the University?s selection of Judge J.

Sneaky French

This letter is in response to Kendra Kirk?s column (?Vive la France,? 3/18/2009). For over 60 years, France?s foreign policy has been guided by the goal of reducing America?s influence in Europe and the world, what many call ?la hyperpuissance am

Honor explanation

Monday?s lead editorial (?10 days to leave (admitting guilt),? 3/16/2009) reflected several misunderstandings about the by-law proposal discussed by the Honor Committee.

Comprehensive coverage

In response to Monday?s Focus article (?Lawn community takes shape,? 3/16/2009), I would like to comment on The Cavalier Daily?s coverage of this year?s Lawn selection process and its resulting statistics.Past reporting of statistics from the Lawn selection process often only included the top 10 most represented organizations of applicants and selected residents.

Learning new manners

Ben Chrisinger protests the Civility Project (?Cultural differences,? 3/16/2009), an effort to provide students with behavioral guidelines for the twenty-first century, because he fears that such a project will ?alienate? foreign students.

Relevant mis-reporting

As a future lawn resident and a member of several organizations that had incorrect records in Monday?s Lawn article (2009 ? 2010 Lawn Application Statistics, 3/16/2009), I was extremely disappointed in the number of errors made by The Cavalier Daily.

News

More than inflation

Concerning The Cavalier Daily?s recent article on my grade inflation work (Research cites grade inflation as cause for national increase in GPA, 3/16/2009), I appreciate the newspaper creating awareness about the problem of grade inflation and think the article reflects my work accurately except in one respect.

News

Statistical error

Significant and surprising errors were made in the statistics for next year?s Lawn residents (2009 ? 2010 Lawn Application Statistics, 3/16/2009). I am one of the Lawn residents for next year and was surprised to see incorrect information.A cursory glance of my own information uncovered the fact that every single one of my statistics was looked over in compiling the published data.

Making the grades

I am writing in response to your editorial concerning the Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese (?The Cost of Inflation,? 2/26/2009) in order to correct some inaccuracies in the piece. We found that we had a disparity between the numerical grading scales used in Spanish 100-200 and 300-400 level courses.

Unbalanced budget reporting

I am the former president of the Virginia Women?s Chorus, writing in regard to the article by Jane Ma (?Student Council denies additional funds for Virginia Women?s Chorus,? 2/25/2009). I appreciate The Cavalier Daily?s efforts to illustrate the impact that Student Council budget cuts are having on student groups around grounds, including the Chorus in its plans to travel to the National Cathedral.

News

Cruel irony

Although I agree that fenceless friendly nations make better neighbors, I am shocked that Kendra Kirk proposed that music ought to be used to deter illegal immigration (?Replacing border fences with ballads,? 2/25/2009). I am especially disturbed by the cartoon drawn by Lauren Caldwell in this article, which is presenting the idea that life in Mexico is somehow better, while ?America is boring.? Clearly, these two individuals have not been following the news in the past few months as to the slaughter that is occurring in Mexico as a dual result of the corruption rampant in all levels of the Mexican government and United States? unwillingness to accept its responsibility for causing some of the economic, social, and political conditions that have ultimately led to the Mexican Drug War.
