No. 15 North Carolina beats Virginia on last-second shot, 72-70

The Virginia women’s basketball team battled to the last second Thursday night against No. 15 North Carolina, but a buzzer-beater by the Tar Heels, who hadn’t scored in four minutes, sent the Cavaliers home with another top-25 loss, 72-70. Sophomore forward Stephanie Mavunga scored the game-winner on a last-second putback.


Junior forward Anthony Gill made five of seven shots against the Demon Deacons. The Cavaliers won at Wake Forest for the first time since 1999-2000 and ensured a top-two finish in the ACC.

No. 2 Virginia destroys Wake Forest, 70-34

The No. 2 Virginia men’s basketball dominated Wake Forest 70-34 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina Wednesday night. Junior forward Anthony Gill led the way for the Cavaliers with 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.


Coach Joanne Boyle said Virginia must continue to look for senior center Sarah Imovbioh in the post against the Tar Heels. Imovbioh will also have her hands full guarding North Carolina's Stephanie Mavunga, the ACC Player of the Week three times this season.

The Virginia women’s basketball team is looking to channel the positive energy from it’s win against Virginia Tech Sunday into its two remaining regular season games, against No. 15 North Carolina and No. 8 Louisville, and beat a top-25 team for the first time this season.

Virginia prepares for second meeting against Wake Forest

Less than two weeks ago, the Virginia men’s basketball team escaped with a 61-60 win against unranked Wake Forest at John Paul Jones Arena . Now, the No. 2 Cavaliers head to the Demon Deacons’ home venue — LVJM Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina — for a Wednesday night rematch.

No. 1 baseball stays undefeated

Virginia rolled to a 9-1 victory in their first game against Marist. Junior Nathan Kirby (2-0, 0.73 ERA) started the game on the hill and pitched 5.1 innings of one-run ball while striking out nine. The Cavaliers sprinted out of the blocks and never looked back.

Women's basketball dominates Hokies, 73-59

In a tale of two halves, the Virginia women’s basketball team snapped a four-game losing skid with a 73-59 win over Virginia Tech at home Sunday afternoon. The win adds a half-point to the Cavaliers’ total in the Commonwealth Clash. The Cavaliers have also now won 18-straight against the Hokies.
