Virginia aims towards NCAA berth at ACC's

Today, the men's and women's track and field teams travel to Clemson, S.C. to participate in the ACC Indoor Track Championships. The men finished sixth among some very tight competition last year -- just 12 points separated third place from seventh place -- while the women's team took ninth place. The men "would like to finish in the top three," senior distance runner Kevin McHale said.

Cavaliers crush Hokies in opener

As the No. 9-ranked Virginia women's lacrosse team walked off University Hall Turf Field last night, not a frown was to be found on anyone's face. The Cavaliers handed a severe beating to the Hokies in their season-opener with a 15-2 win, immediately bringing them to first place in the conference with a 1-0 record overall and in the ACC.

Cavs refuse to give up hope

The Virginia women's basketball team will take to the road tonight with the hope of not returning to John Paul Jones Arena, the site of this year's Women's National Invitation Tournament, this season. Cavaliers look to overcome point deficit

Nine and 91: On the bus down to Chapel Hill for the ACC Championship meet, these are the numbers that will occupy the thoughts of the Virginia men's swimming and diving team: nine being the number of consecutive titles the Cavaliers will hold if they win this weekend, and 91 being the point deficit they will have to surmount before they can claim that honor. "This is the single greatest deficit ever faced at the completion of diving in the history of ACC swimming and diving," coach Mark Bernardino said.

The emergence of J.R. Reynolds

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine approached J.R. Reynolds at Jaberwoke and told him that she thought he was a "wuss." Reynolds had been struggling with leg cramps in consecutive games, most notably in possessions that gave the opposing team a four-on-five break in transition that led to a three pointer each time. "You should drink more Gatorade," she said.

Cavs lose opener in final seconds

With 10 seconds left in the game, the 1,076 fans gathered at the U-Hall Turf Field for the men's lacrosse season opener were confident that Virginia's one goal lead would be enough to win -- they were wrong.

Cavs down George Washington

With snow flurries falling late Sunday afternoon at Davenport Field, the Cavaliers secured their second victory of the weekend, an 11-1 dismissal of George Washington. It was the second straight day Virginia (4-1) put 11 runs on the scoreboard, defeating the Colonials 11-0 the day before. Sophomore shortstop Greg Miclat led the Virginia offense, going nine for 10 on the weekend, including a perfect five for five Sunday. "I'm seeing the ball well and hitting it to the right spots," Miclat said.
