Cavs fall to FSU in nail-biter

It appeared to be déjà vu all over again for the Virginia women's basketball team yesterday afternoon. Just like in their previous meeting, the Cavaliers led at the half only to be subject to a big Florida State run to open up the second half. Unlike their 16-point loss in Tallahassee, Virginia fought back but ultimately fell to the Seminoles 79-77. The game resembled a boxing match -- each time Virginia would hit a shot to take the lead, the Seminoles would respond with one of their own.

Cavs prepare to host Seminoles tomorrow at JPJ

Following a big win Tuesday over Longwood, the Virginia men's basketball team hopes to return to its stellar level of conference play tomorrow afternoon against what will prove to be "a very talented Florida State team," Virginia coach Dave Leitao said. "They're going to challenge us as much as we've been challenged all year by the way they play," Leitao said.

Virginia aiming at late season run for tournament

With their collegiate careers coming to a close, senior center Siedah Williams and senior guard Brenna McGuire will surely have their adrenaline pumping in their last game in front of the home crowd at John Paul Jones Arena, especially after knocking off Virginia Tech last night 79-76 in Blacksburg. Saturday, the Virginia women's basketball team (15-11, 4-7 ACC) will need large contributions from these two experienced seniors to avenge a disappointing loss to Florida State (18-7, 7-3 ACC) earlier in the season.

Virginia to defend national No. 1 ranking this weekend

The Virginia men's lacrosse team will begin defending its No. 1 preseason ranking Sunday. The season opener pits the Cavaliers against the Drexel Dragons, with face off scheduled for 1 p.m. "Everybody's ready, everybody's excited and we're ready to bring it to Drexel on Sunday," senior goalie Kip Turner said. The Cavalier-Dragon season opener has become somewhat of a tradition for the two schools.

Cavs look to repeat title

Returning from a 15-4 season in 2006 that included an ACC championship (the team's second in three years) and advancing to the NCAA Championships for the 11th consecutive year, the Virginia women's lacrosse team is working hard to prepare for the 2007 season. The squad opened up the season with a series of scrimmages at the South of the Border Tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C., where the Cavaliers faced ACC-rivals Duke, North Carolina and Davidson. "We have been working a lot harder this preseason than in the past," senior co-captain Jess Wasilewski said.

Is the ACC's tradition of excellence still alive and well?

As President Casteen gave his State of the University address last week, I began to reflect on the state of our athletic conference, the ACC. It seems like only yesterday (July 2004, actually) when the league expanded to 11 teams, bringing an end to the beloved home and away series in basketball and the chance to play each team in football every year. No longer could Virginia fans count on the opportunity to scream at Coach K every season or keep up with all of ACC football.
