Youth movement takes over for Virginia

By Ryan Franklin Cavalier Daily Associate Editor Just like every other season, the Virginia women's tennis team faces a rigorous schedule this upcoming season against the powerhouse that is the ACC. The difference this season is that the women will be competing with a very young team composed largely of freshman players as well as one transfer.

Cavaliers seize victory from jaws of defeat against Spartans

Oftentimes, one huge play can be the difference between victory and defeat -- that was the case for the Virginia wrestling team in their 20-15 victory against UNC-Greensboro Saturday. With Virginia trailing 9-7 going into the sixth match, their outcome looked bleak with senior Damian Johnson trailing 4-1.

Virginia looks to avenge loss tonight

Freshman guard Monica Wright and sophomore forward Lyndra Littles may be two of the best players on the Virginia women's basketball team, but they do little good sitting on the bench next to Virginia coach Debbie Ryan. That is exactly what happened Friday night when foul trouble and offensive fireworks by Maryland led to an early deficit the Cavaliers could never overcome in an emotional 95-68 loss. "I felt like we could score anytime we wanted against them," Ryan said.

Assistant coaches essential for success

Though the head coach is often the one given credit and blame for a team's performance, his or her assistants have a lot, if not everything, to do with the team's success. Fortunately for the Virginia wrestling team, the coach has two excellent assistants in Scott Moore and Pat DeGain. "My staff is great," Virginia coach Steve Garland said.

Cavs host Boston College as team looks to break three-game skid with ACC win

It's not quite do-or-die for the Virginia men's basketball team, but it's close. The Cavaliers will face a tough test Saturday night when Boston College travels to Charlottesville to take on Virginia at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers find themselves in the midst of a three-game losing streak and have recently endured blowout losses to Xavier and Duke.
