True freshman Cunningham earns start on offensive line

With a running game that is playing a Jekyll-and-Hyde routine, Virginia football coaches are looking to add competition among their offensive linemen to inspire the unit to play more consistently. Enter freshman offensive guard Ian- Yates Cunningham. An inspiring sight based on physical attributes alone, the 6-foot-6, 309-pound guard has started the past two Cavalier away games, at N.C.

As a light rain began to fall over Rivanna Reservoir yesterday morning, the Virginia women's crew team's four boat was in the midst of the second competitive race of the Rivanna Romp, the final fall meet for the Cavalier Crew team.

Virginia falls in second round of NCAA

After controlling the ball for most of the contest and outshooting Villanova 20 to 5, the No. 7 seed Virginia women's soccer team fell to the Wildcats 4-2 in penalty kicks in yesterday's second round NCAA tournament match at Klöckner Stadium. The game ended in a scoreless tie and went on to penalty kicks, where Villanova goalkeeper Chrissy Dolan twice thwarted the Cavaliers' attempts from six yards out, giving the Wildcat shooters the cushion they needed to advance.

Notre Dame gives further consideration to joining ACC

As a result of the conference realignements over the past few weeks, Notre Dame has seriously considered applying for full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference, USA Today reported yesterday. The Fighting Irish are members of the Big East in most sports, but their storied football program has been independent for over 100 years. The ACC's new additions of Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College make a jump to the ACC more appealing to Notre Dame, who has struggled to a 3-6 record this season in football. Two officials within the ACC with knowledge of the moves told USA Today that Notre Dame's recent interest is considered to be serious.

Virginia travels to Regionals this weekend

With the top two teams automatically qualifying for Nationals, the Virginia men's and women's squads have a berth set in their sights as they head to the Cross Country Regional Championships tomorrow in Greenville, N.C. In addition, two or three other schools will likely be extended an at-large bid and the top four runners whose teams do not make the cut will also be handed invitations. The men's squad's last big race came at the ACC championships at Wake Forest on Nov.
