Rush to Judgement

Is there anything more exciting than some good preseason hockey? Okay, I admit that was a sarcastic comment made in jest, but there has been one story that has created quite a storm this past week -- the controversy surrounding Rush Limbaugh's statements about Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb on ESPN's NFL Countdown. Last Sunday, Limbaugh made the following comment: "I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL.

Men's golf takes ninth at Franklin Street Invite

Finishing with an overall score of 929 (+65), the Virginia men's golf team took ninth place in the Franklin Street Partners Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. Host North Carolina narrowly escaped with the title, shooting an 875 overall, with Georgia State taking second with 879, only four strokes behind North Carolina. Senior Jeremy Luce, shooting a 230 (+14) overall, led Virginia in the tournament with sophomores Brad Tilley and Craig Cook-Stevenson shooting 234, being tied for 32nd, following Luce.

Virginia blows past North Carolina, 38-13

Riding the arm of Matt Schaub and the legs of Wali Lundy, the Virginia Cavaliers (4-1, 3-0 ACC) walked over a struggling UNC team (0-5, 0-3), 38-13, Saturday at Chapel Hill. Despite taking the early advantage off a field goal from senior kicker Dan Orner, UNC could not overcome the play of its defense -- rated the worst in the nation -- and eventually crumbled from the pressure of the Cavaliers' offensive attack.

New faces stand out for Cavs

I am no sidewalk psychic, but I saw the future of Virginia football Saturday at North Carolina. And that future wasn't in the right arm of Matt Schaub, who looked confident and sharp in the pocket, completing 19-of-22 attempts with no picks.

Virginia's fifth-ranked women's soccer team returns to Kl?kner Stadium on tomorrow night for its ACC home opener against Florida State. The Cavaliers (8-1-1, 1-0 ACC) have had an impressive start this year.

Two teams headed in two very different directions will renew their rivalry in Chapel Hill tomorrow afternoon. The Cavaliers are coming off of an emotional 27-24 home victory over Wake Forest last weekend.

Point guard commits to play for Virginia

Brewster Academy (N.H.) swingman Adrian Joseph orally committed to play basketball for Virginia next fall. The 6-foot-7, 200-pound Joseph is projected to play small forward at the collegiate level.

Field hockey drops squeaker to Tribe

William & Mary forward Kelly McQuade collected a loose ball in front of the Virginia goal and scored from short range five minutes into the overtime session, thwarting a Virginia comeback effort and securing victory for the Tribe. The Cavaliers fell behind early in the game, allowing three William & Mary goals in the first 248 seconds.

Hammond receives honors

Virginia women's soccer midfielder Kelly Hammond was honored with two national awards this week. Hammond was named to the Soccer American Team of the Week as well as the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week. Hammond was recognized for her role in Virginia's Sept.

If it seems like North Carolina senior wide receiver Bobby Blizzard knows the Virginia defensive secondary like a good friend, that's because he does. Growing up in Hampton, Va., Blizzard attended Hampton High School with Virginia senior cornerback Almondo "Muffin" Curry.
