I n trying to hold down No. 21 North Carolina yes terday, the Virginia women's basketball team played tight defense and forced 21 turnovers.

Cavaliers fall to first-ranked Duke

DURHAM, NC - After scoring only ten field goals in the first half, the Duke Blue Devils used a 17-6 run to open the second half and put the Virginia men's basketball team away for good. A first half that seemed to preview a nail-biter turned out to be a tease, as the Blue Devils (18-1, 6-1 ACC) picked it up in the second half to beat the Cavaliers (14-3, 4-3), 94-81 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. In the first half, Virginia stayed tight behind the efforts of its freshmen.

Virginia looks to go above .500 in ACC

After toppling Florida State, 66-62, on Wednesday, the Virginia women's basketball team (11-8, 4-4 ACC) now sets its sights on Chapel Hill, where it will take on ACC foe North Carolina (14-5, 4-3) on Sunday. "Carolina's a great team, and we are going to have to play very, very well to beat them," Virginia coach Debbie Ryan said.

Virginia must execute from the perimeter to bust the zone

F or real estate enthusiasts, the key to a superior sale is acknowl- edged as "Location, location, location." For teams trying to stop the Cavaliers' offense recently, it's been more like "Zone, zone, zone." Because of Virginia players' ability to break down man-to-man defenses with their driving abilities (Chris Williams, Adam Hall, Keith Jenifer) or strong inside game (Travis Watson) opponents have grown fond of playing a zone defense and daring Virginia to shoot the outside shot. In the Cavaliers' two losses this season, they were unable to connect from three-point range against the zone.

Cavaliers place second in state championships

Just when their backs were flat to the mat, the Virginia wrestling team pulled itself together and escaped an otherwise lackluster season by placing second at the Virginia Intercollegiate State Wrestling Championships Saturday. Virginia Tech beat out the Cavaliers by 15.5 points to claim the state championship.
