Failure to adjust

With Saturday’s head-scratching loss to North Carolina, the Virginia football team fell to 4-4 on the year. Our team this year is obviously much better than last year’s edition, but the Cavaliers still have several enormous flaws which could keep them from reaching bowl eligibility.

North Carolina nips Virginia, 28-27

Virginia (4-4, 2-2 ACC) played the role of front-runner from the opening minutes of the first quarter in its Homecomings game, but most of the season-high 45,200 fans in attendance ultimately departed the stadium with a bitter taste in their mouths.

No. 3 Virginia battles Duke, No. 14 Hokies on the road

After starting the season with 10 consecutive wins, the No. 3 Virginia women’s soccer team dropped its first game to No. 2 Florida State on Sept. 28. Now nearly a month ago and since then the Cavaliers have started a new win streak, notching four straight victories against ACC opponents.

Rowers ready for Princeton Chase

Returning from Boston late on Sunday night after finishing as the top collegiate boat at the Head of the Charles for the fourth consecutive year, the Virginia women’s rowing team had already moved on, shifting focus to the next races, this upcoming weekend in Princeton and beyond. Though the Cavaliers were proud of their accomplishment, the girls know that the Charles was just a starting point for the season.

Offensive line: anchoring Virginia football

Driving back to Charlottesville after a tough defeat at Duke last Saturday night, Ross Burbank watched pieces of North Carolina’s 48-43 comeback win against Georgia Tech.The junior center’s attention was divided. The Tar Heels and Yellow Jackets were scoring in bunches, and the game was exciting, to be sure — but he was also watching “Gladiator.”

Cavaliers host UNC in Homecomings game

The year was 1892. Ellis Island had newly opened as an immigration center, and the first public basketball game had been played in Springfield, Massachusetts. American football, meanwhile, was already well-established.

The East Region's top seed from a season ago, the Virginia Cavaliers, received the No. 8 national ranking in the USA Today preseason poll released last Thursday.


Junior middle hitter Natalie Bausback had a team-high 12 kills in the Cavaliers' second loss to Duke this year.

Volleyball falls in straight sets at No. 21 Duke

The Virginia volleyball team took a 23-22 lead in the third set against Duke Friday night, but it was too little too late as the No. 21 Blue Devils (15-4, 7-1 ACC) secured three straight points to take the set and match (25-14, 25-18, 25-23) for their 10th straight win.

No. 3 Women’s soccer bests Cardinals in first-ever matchup

With the 2014 regular season winding down and engrossed in the ACC stretch run, the third-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team (14-1, 6-1 ACC) traveled to Kentucky for its first-ever matchup with new ACC foe Louisville (6-7-2, 2-3-2 ACC).Coming off back-to-back six-goal performances against Boston College and NC State, the Cavaliers were brimming with confidence as they took on the Cardinals, who have struggled thus far in conference play, winning just two of seven ACC games in their inaugural season.
