Volunteers outgun Cavaliers, 87-52

When Tennessee senior guard Antonio Barton hit a half-court 3-pointer as time expired in the first half, it epitomized the Virginia men’s basketball team’s night. Wolverines thrash punchless Cavs

Reeling from a three-game losing streak and season-long shooting woes, the Virginia women’s basketball team took the floor against Michigan on Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena looking to change its tune. By the time the final horn had sounded on a 73-53 loss, however, the repetitive clangs of a ball striking iron remained the definitive sound of the Cavaliers’ 2013-14 campaign. Though Virginia (3-5) put up 57 shots against the Wolverines (6-3), only 19 fell through the net.

Ignoring the ribbons

Participant ribbons are farces, empty consolations to fill the void resulting from mediocre performance. That’s what the voice in my head has always told me, at least. In this last decade and a half — as an athlete, a student and a human being — the fear of the humiliation associated with those green ribbons has compelled me to constantly seek the blue ribbon of triumph. Blue means the applause of others; blue means validation.

NFL playoff predictions

Finals season is upon us, and there are just four weeks of the NFL regular season to go. That means it’s about time for that age-old tradition that football-fanatic college students like me participate in every year — trying so hard to concentrate on my studies, banging my head on my desk a couple of times, cursing my non-existent willpower, then heading back to ESPN.com to try to predict how the playoffs will turn out.
