Men, women wash away the competition at Lou Onesty Invitational

Pouring rain from Tropical Storm Hanna did not stop the Virginia cross country team from making an impressive showing in its first race of the season Saturday.The Virginia men won the 8K with a combined team score of 19, leading Duke (36), William & Mary (87), George Mason (108) and Norfolk State (135).The women followed suit in the 5K run with a team score of 18, defeating William & Mary (37), and George Mason (80).The Lou Onesty Invitational marked coach Jason Vigilante?s debut with Virginia; the coach came in only a month earlier to take over the program.?I think the most important thing with our first competition is that we come away closer as a group,? Vigilante said.

Vigilante sets sights on debut with Virginia

This Saturday the defending ACC-champion Virginia cross country team will host the Lou Onesty Invitational at Panorama Farms, an early-season event in which the Cavaliers traditionally compete against in-state rivals such as William & Mary and VCU.Virginia will look to open the season with a strong performance by both the men and women at the event, which is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.?This will be the first opportunity for our cross country team to compete,? Virginia coach Jason Vigilante said.

Throughout this entire week, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton and general manager Mickey Loomis have been forced to call a number of them.When news broke that Hurricane Gustav was going to hit New Orleans harder than any middle linebacker, Payton and Loomis made plans to relocate the team to Indianapolis, Ind.

The accomplishments Virginia women?s volleyball coach Lee Maes and his teams achieved while he was the head assistant coach at Nebraska are numerous and impressive: a national championship, three conference championships and 13 All-Americans.Now in his first season as the head coach of the Cavaliers, Maes hopes to bring similar accolades to Virginia.?Our expectation every season is to have the opportunity to compete for the ACC Championship with the goal of also earning an NCAA berth,? Maes said.
