The Hoos sell out

Last weekend I went to North Carolina and visited ESPN's College Gameday set where the show was filming on location before the Miami at N.C.

Receivers do the dirty work

While most football teams rely heavily on the pass-catching ability and game-breaking speed of their wide receivers, those skills seem to be superfluous requirements to play the position for the Cavaliers. Against Duke, the hands of starting receivers Deyon Williams and Michael McGrew were far more likely to be found grappling with the shoulder pads of a Duke defensive back than they were to be reaching for the pigskin being tossed their way.

Hammond starts for Cavs after nearly fatal accident

Entering her third year as a member of the Cavaliers, forward Kelly Hammond looked prime for a historic season. As a sophomore, Hammond led Virginia in points (30), goals (12) and game-winning goals (6). She was a first-team All-ACC member as well as a second-team All-American.

As the regular season races closer to conclusion, the Virginia volleyball team finds itself in a position to control its own destiny. With two wins this past weekend, the Cavaliers (15-7, 5-5 ACC) have pulled themselves out of the bottom third of the ACC.

Florida's Zook to be fired at conclusion of season

University of Florida head football coach Ron Zook will be fired at the season's end, Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley announced on Monday. According to the Gainesville Sun, Foley and University President Bernie Machen met Sunday and decided it was time for Zook to go. The head coached directed the Gators to their first loss to a team with a losing record Saturday, when Florida was defeated by Mississippi State -- a 24.5 point underdog -- 38-31.

Virginia beats back Blue Devils in OT

It may have been the frigid weather, maybe even the intimidating atmosphere of Klöckner. Whatever it was, Virginia (13-2, 4-1 ACC) would love more of it as they overcame a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 over the Duke Blue Devils (13-3, 3-3 ACC) Saturday night. Midfielder Mike Littlefield became an instant hero when he finished off a Hunter Freeman cross six minutes into overtime, capping an impressive comeback by the Cavaliers and setting off wild celebrations in the stands. In an entertaining game played at a frenetic pace from the start, both teams found it extremely hard to keep possession and saw early opportunities sail wide of the goal.

Cavaliers blow away Hurricanes at home

The No. 20 Virginia women cruised to a 151-125 victory over visiting Miami Friday night in the season opener at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The score doesn't do justice to the dominating performance turned in by the Cavalier swimmers.

All University students are required to live on Grounds in their first year, but they have many on and off-Grounds housing options going into their second year. Students face immense pressure to decide on housing as soon as possible, and this high demand has strained the capacities of both on and off-Grounds accommodations. Lauren Seeliger and Brandon Kile, two third-year Cavalier Daily News writers, discuss the impact of the student housing frenzy on both University students and the Charlottesville community.
