New style working wonders for Virginia

Pressure and aggression are the new buzzwords of Virginia baseball. In his first year, coach Brian O'Connor has instituted an aggressive style of play that stresses base running and strong pitching as the cornerstones of a successful baseball program. So far, the philosophy has translated into success on the field.

Can Brian Boland coach or what? He's taken six guys from his first two recruiting classes -- none of whom are even of legal drinking age -- and has them off to a school record 15-1 start, including a first place ACC mark of 4-0.

Men's lacrosse rebounds against Towson

The Virginia men's lacrosse team pulled off its most exciting win of the season yesterday, a 9-8 overtime victory over Towson to improve its record to 2-4 on the season. Entering the locker room at halftime, Towson held the lead at 5-2, and the initial 30 minutes of contest were reminiscent of Virginia's four previous losses.

I've never written a eulogy before, but Saturday was the last Virginia basketball game of my college career, so I've decided to take it as an opportunity to do so. For me, Virginia's 73-63 loss to Villanova marked an end of an era.

Virginia survives despite strong winds

The No. 16 Cavaliers earned a tough 4-3 victory over No. 43 Wake Forest Saturday, improving to 14-1 on the season and recording the first 4-0 ACC start in school history. While Virginia may have been the favorite over the now 9-6 Demon Deacons, difficult weather conditions exacerbated the conference struggle. "It was tough conditions out here today," Virginia coach Brian Boland said.

Virginia struggles from long-range, falls to Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- After shooting lights out three days ago, the Cavaliers couldn't flip the switch back on Saturday, as a poor shooting performance led to a 73-63 defeat at the hands of Villanova in the second round of the NIT. While Virginia connected on 13 three-pointers Wednesday night against George Washington, they connected on just one of 10 attempts from beyond the arc against Villanova. "We didn't have a great game -- we weren't sharp," Virginia coach Pete Gillen said.

Behind Koshansky's arm, Cavs cruise

The No. 19 Virginia baseball team (18-5, 4-2 ACC) snapped their three-game losing skid with a 6-2 victory in the finale of a three-game series against visiting North Carolina (16-5, 2-1 ACC). The win came on the backs of solid pitching and hitting from senior Joe Koshansky and sophomore Ryan Zimmerman.
