Wake names Peterson women's basketball coach

Wake Forest athletic direction Ron Wellman announced yesterday that Mike Peterson will serve as the new head coach for the Demon Deacon's women's basketball team. Peterson has served as an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota men's team for the past five years.

Cavaliers win track and field titles at Duke Relays

In Durham this weekend, Virginia's David Sullivan set a new personal best in the pole vault with a height of 16' 8.75" to win the first of two titles for the Cavaliers. Javelin thrower Inge Jorgenson also won her competition with a toss of 163' 4", a successful performance for the former ACC champion and All-American. Jason Young won the men's 200-meter developmental race with a time of 21.67 seconds.

DURHAM, N.C. -- In their last ACC matchup of the year, the Virginia (9-2, 2-1 ACC) women's lacrosse high-octane offense ran into a staunch Duke (6-3, 2-1) defense Saturday and came up just short, losing 10-9.

Cavs drop series to Tar Heels

For a softball team whose season-long goal has been to make the regional tournament, the Cavaliers certainly are making things difficult for themselves. Virginia (25-20, 0-2 ACC) dropped two games yesterday to ACC rival North Carolina (32-14, 2-0) in the team's first two conference games of the season.

Cavaliers finish strong to seal victory

DURHAM, N.C. -- Virginia coach Brian O'Connor said the games in April will tell what kind of a baseball team Virginia has. The squad began April in strong fashion this weekend with a three-game sweep of Duke (14-16, 3-6 ACC) in Durham. Virginia improved to 25-7 on the season and 8-4 in the conference while defeating the Blue Devils, 3-1, in the series finale and 8-1, 6-5 in the first two contests.

Freshman basketball player granted release

Freshman Alisa Wulff was granted release from the women's basketball team due to family medical problems, coach Debbie Ryan announced Wednesday. Wulff's father recently was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and will require a heart transplant within the next two years.
