Welsh sounds off on gridiron recruits

The 63-21 beating the Cavaliers absorbed at the hands of Illinois a month ago in the Micronpc.com Bowl was still fresh in his mind, but Virginia football Coach George Welsh chose to focus on the future of the program in his press conference yesterday, a day after the Cavs inked 22 high school recruits. "Overall, there's a lot of speed in this class, a lot of athleticism," Welsh said of a group that includes 14 skill position players and seven linemen.

Virginia's Watson, Hand net ACC accolades

Virginia point guard Donald Hand and North Carolina center Brendan Haywood shared ACC Player of the Week honors after leading their respective teams to an undefeated week. In games against Virginia Tech, Florida State and Wake Forest, Hand scored a total of 60 points while shooting 46.2 percent from the floor. Meanwhile, Haywood lifted the Tar Heels to ACC triumphs over Georgia Tech and Maryland, helping Carolina end a four-game slide.

Virginia swimmers cruise past Wildcats

With only one meet left before the ACC championships, the Virginia swimming and diving teams added one more school to their lengthy list of victims this season. On Saturday the men's team (6-1, 3-1 ACC) raced past Villanova for a final score of 132-87 and the women's squad (7-0, 4-0 ACC) followed in similar fashion, winning 123-90. Virginia started off strong as the women's 200-yard medley relay teams claimed first, second and third place in the first event.

Cavs begin four-game road trip

The Virginia men's basketball team kicks off a four-game road trip Super Bowl Sunday, as they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face Wake Forest at 1 p.m. The surging Cavaliers (14-5, 4-2 ACC), winners of their last four games, are meeting a Demon Deacon squad (11-7, 2-4) that has been struggling recently.
