Best Jazz on D'earth

The Free Bridge Quintet played -- and even sang -- their hearts out Saturday night in Old Cabell Hall at a concert celebrating the sultry, swanky and soulful New Orleans jazz. The faculty jazz quintet, featuring John D'earth on trumpet, Jeff Decker on saxophone and clarinet, Pete Spaar on bass, Robert Jospé on drums and Bob Hallahan on piano, set a playful mood for the evening with upbeat, well-known tunes by famous musicians such as Louis Armstrong and Scott Joplin.

Read between the Lines

From March 22-26, Charlottesville, Va. will become every bibliophile's dream. In its 12th year, the Virginia Festival of the Book will welcome hundreds of writers, publishers, and readers in a celebration of literacy, learning and the joy of reading. The festival, which drew a record attendance of 22,874 visitors last year, successfully lured guests from Charlottesville, greater Virginia, America and the world with its enticing lineup of writers. The 2005 Virginia Festival of the Book, which hailed revered authors such as David Baldacci, Jonathan Safran Foer and Valerie Tripp as well as late poet Robert Creeley, is a hard act to follow.

'Luminosity' throws light on the subject of British history

"What is the shape of history?" This is a question that director Betsy Tucker poses in the University Drama Department's production of "Luminosity." Penned by British playwright Nick Stafford, the play explores the dialectic between black and white in British history. Debra Mercer is an artist and the only daughter of the wealthy Mercer family in 1999 Britain.
