Be a master detective in U.Va. drama's 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood'

After seeing the opening night of The Mystery of Edwin Drood at Culbreth Theater, I cannot help but think that all Charles Dickens' novels should be turned into musicals. Of course, there are other Dickens' stories that have been converted into musical performances -- Oliver and A Christmas Carol -- but Drood brings something entirely new to the table.

DANCE, DANCE RAVE-OLUTION

Go out on a given weekend in Charlottesville and you'll find a myriad of nightlife. Bars crowd the Corner, outside and inside dining options pepper the Downtown Mall and fraternity parties line Rugby Road.

Hot Hot Heat's latest sizzles

I'm a sucker for skinny white boys with 'fros. I can honestly say that I bought Hot Hot Heat's first album because I thought lead singer Steve Bays was, well, hot hot.

Spotlight finally on Apple album

Fiona Apple finished recording her third album in 2003. With her bluesy, cracking voice and two critically acclaimed albums under her belt, Apple was poised to take her spot as one her generation's most heartfelt songwriters. Instead, as seems to be her track record, things didn't go according to plan.

Ravens Place: No place like high school

Hi. My name is Seltzer -- Molly Seltzer. I interview bands -- high school bands. It's not often that music critics find themselves bouncing between full-time hardcore studs and full-time high school students: The average age of Engine Down (featured in my last column) and the average age of this week's band differs by more than 10 years. Ravens Place consists of four juniors and one senior from Albemarle High.

Shake it to Out Hud

Remember when !!!'s "Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard" single came out and everyone was all, "This is totally amazing, I can't wait for the full-length to come out so I can dance for ten times as long?" That's been my feeling about Out Hud since its six-song LP S.T.R.E.E.T.D.A.D.

Rock show takes back the night

When I think of Tyrannosaurus Rock shows, often held in Maury Hall, two things come to mind. The first is sweat, which is to be expected when a bunch of energized college kids get together to dance.

Deft and subtle, 'Language' rocks

It's disappointingly rare to find a band that truly rocks anymore. Sure, you might find a good rock song on a standard pop album, but it will always be the lone warrior, standing out like a sore thumb amongst the lighter, radio-ready fare. Even the bands that are supposed to rock seem to have lost their touch, as everything I hear on the radio these days seems formulaic and uninventive.

Hello, Sunshine... It's Springfest!

Due to the abolition of Easters, which typically resulted in students either failing spring semester or nursing hangovers for the rest of the year, the University has had to find other ways to celebrate the coming of warmer weather.
