Cavalier track and field to embrace Virginia Challenge

Steady rain forced Cavalier track and field athletes into University Hall Tuesday where they continued practicing. Runners warmed up in the underground tunnels, while jumpers and throwers assembled in a vaulted space known as “The Cage,” training for the important home meet, the Virginia Challenge, only three days out.

Sophomore Jordan Young, here competing in the discus throw, has high ambitions as a hammer thrower for this year's NCAA meet.

Young a rising star in tricky hammer throw

“That 16-pound ball seems weightless when I’m spinning it around and when the wire leaves my hands,” Young said. “A good hammer throw is such a satisfying feeling. That ball goes a long way, and it’s kind of effortless.”

Senior Payton Hazzard teamed up with sophomores Nathan Kiley, Mike Marsella and Henry Wynne for a sixth-place finish in the men's distance medley relay.
