Virginia cross country turned in top-five performances against elite competition Friday at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the season-opening UVa Duals Wednesday night at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Virginia.

The two-day Virginia Challenge concluded Saturday night with Cavalier track and field athletes competing in fan favorite events.
Steady rain forced Cavalier track and field athletes into University Hall Tuesday where they continued practicing. Runners warmed up in the underground tunnels, while jumpers and throwers assembled in a vaulted space known as “The Cage,” training for the important home meet, the Virginia Challenge, only three days out.
“That 16-pound ball seems weightless when I’m spinning it around and when the wire leaves my hands,” Young said. “A good hammer throw is such a satisfying feeling. That ball goes a long way, and it’s kind of effortless.”
Virginia track and field made another stride forward Friday and Saturday in California.
Nine Cavalier track and field athletes competed at the Fred Hardy Invitational in Richmond on Friday. This Virginia unit was comprised of five freshmen, three sophomores, and one junior.

On Saturday afternoon, the Cavalier track and field program hosted its first outdoor meet of 2015 — the Virginia Cup.

Six athletes from the men’s Cavalier track and field team competed in Fayetteville, Arkansas at the NCAA Indoor Championships over the weekend. At the end of competition, Virginia found itself in 23rd place – the top finish among ACC schools.
Sophomore Jordan Young set the tone Thursday. Young’s weight throw of 22.92 meters — 1.56 meters farther than any of his opponents’ — shattered his own school record and secured a first-place finish.
