Student robbed, assaulted on Grounds

Suspect attacked student near Humphreys House

A student was forcibly robbed near Humphreys House (above) Saturday morning.

A University student was robbed near Humphreys House this Saturday at approximately 5:40 a.m. by an unidentified suspect.

After striking the victim in the head, the suspect reportedly took money from the victim’s pocket and fled the scene on foot. The suspect was wearing a grey hoodie at the time of the incident. No further description has been reported.

The University Police Department is actively investigating the case.

University Police spokesperson Melissa Fielding said in an email the incident “is unusual because it occurred near a dorm.”

Chief of University Police Michael A. Gibson sent an email to the student body reporting the incident within hours of its occurrence.

The email offered a variety of safety precautions to help students protect themselves if they are faced with a similar situation. Advice included walking with a companion, cooperating with the suspect if he or she makes a demand to hand over a belonging and immediately notifying the police of an incident.

Fielding advised students “be aware of [their] surroundings” and to “[alert] police if something seems suspicious.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact the University Police at 434-924-7166.
