In Virginia’s final regular season ACC matchup, the team traveled to Lynn Stadium in Louisville, Ky., to take on the Louisville Cardinals.
No. 7 Virginia (13-3-2, 6-2-2 ACC) ended up closing the regular season on a positive note, defeating Louisville (7-7-4, 2-5-3 ACC) by a final score of 2-1.
As expected, Louisville came out desperate for a win, but the Cavaliers were able to snuff out their advances, and find two goals to give Virginia a confidence boosting win on the road.
The Cavaliers opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the 33rd minute. Senior midfielder Alexis Shaffer stepped up to the penalty spot confidently, as she always does, and buried one home to give the Cavaliers the lead that remained 1-0 until halftime.
The Cavaliers were in control most of the first half, but it was essential that they came out of the locker room and extended their lead against a desperate but dangerous Louisville team that had hoped to snatch a win late in the game.
The Cavaliers responded and doubled their lead in the 54th minute, as junior forward Veronica Latsko finished off freshman forward Alissa Gorzak’s cross into the box.
Louisville managed to pull one back in the 68th minute, but it was too little too late.
The Cavaliers clung to their 2-1 lead for the remaining 22 minutes and emerged with a much-needed win before the ACC postseason begins.
