The Cavaliers look to continue undefeated streak

After a week that included a thrilling double-overtime win against then-No. 2 West Virginia and a home-opener win, No. 3 Virginia is back in action to host Wisconsin on Thursday night.

The Cavaliers (3-0-0) enter the match after defeating Liberty to get their third win of the season. In the Cavaliers’ home opener, freshman midfielder Taryn Torres and junior midfielder Montana Sutton each scored in the second half to give Virginia the 2-0 win. Torres — who was a 2016 NSCAA All-America in high school — also scored in the opening match of the season, which was a 2-0 win against UNC-Wilmington.

Wisconsin (3-1-0) has also found success in a freshman forward, as Cameron Murtha leads the Badgers with two goals so far this season. Murtha, the 2017 Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year, picked up her first goal in a 2-0 win against Creighton, and she most recently scored in the Badgers’ 2-0 win over Northern Illinois.

Junior forward Lauren Rice also assisted in the contest against Northern Illinois, contributing to the 18 shots the Wisconsin offense was able to generate. Meanwhile, Northern Illinois only got off one shot in the entire match.

However, the Wisconsin defense struggled earlier in the season — suffering a 5-0 defeat by Stanford.

Contrarily, the Virginia defense has been solid throughout the season— only allowing one goal in three games. The defensive line is led by freshman goalkeeper Laurel Ivory, who has recorded two clean sheets this season, and sophomore defender Phoebe McClernon. The Cavaliers’ defense held both Liberty (0-2-2) and UNC Wilmington (2-2-0) to just two shots in the entire game.

The match between the Cavaliers and the Badgers is set to kick off at 8 p.m. Thursday in Klöckner Stadium.

After the Wisconsin game, the Cavaliers will remain in Charlottesville for another three games. First up, Virginia will host Richmond Sunday for an in-state matchup. Then, next week, the Cavaliers will be challenged by two top-10 teams, as No. 1 UCLA and No. 4 Penn State come to Klöckner Stadium.
