In the third set, things began to look dire for the Cavaliers as they were unable to hold off a crushing 7-1 run by Central Florida.

Virginia (4-7) endured another tough weekend, dropping both of their matches against Central Florida (7-5), both times dropping three straight sets.

The Cavaliers opened their weekend tournament against the Knights Friday and learned first-hand just how devastating long offensive runs by Central Florida could be. In the first set, a 6-1 run by the Knights was able to put victory out of reach for Virginia. In the second set, a valiant effort by Virginia prevented the set point for three final serves, but the early point deficit made winning the set nearly impossible and the Cavaliers dropped the set 25-17.

In the third set, things began to look dire for the Cavaliers as they were unable to hold off a crushing 7-1 run by Central Florida. Virginia was unable to keep up on both sides of the ball and lost their third and final set of the day 25-17.

“Our streaky play did us in tonight,” Coach Aaron Smith said. “We played some good volleyball at times, but we need to do it for longer stretches.”

Virginia returned to the court the following day but found themselves repeating many of the same mistakes from the day before. The Cavaliers were unable to score more than 18 points in a single set over the course of the day and faced long scoring droughts that made every set unwinnable.

Virginia struggled to even come close to the numbers Central Florida was able to put up — getting outshot .359-.148 — and trailed the Knights by eight blocks at the net.

Virginia will now begin ACC play as they travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to face the Florida State Seminoles Friday at 6:30 p.m.
