Former Duke hoops standout Elton Brand, the No. 1 pick in this year's NBA draft, signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Bulls.
The deal is reportedly worth $10 million dollars. The deal is tilted so that most of the money comes at the end of the contract.
Brand, who played with the U.S. national team in the Olympic-qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico for the past month, joins the Bulls in Utah. Chicago is participating in the Rocky Mountain Summer League.
Hunting in Jacksonville: Ex-Cavalier basketball player Kris Hunter will transfer to Jacksonville University for his final season of eligibility. Hunter was second in the ACC in blocked shots with 87.
Junior team falls in gold medal game: The U.S. Junior World Championship Team lost to Spain in the gold medal game, 94-87. The team finished with a 7-1 record while earning the silver medal.
Virginia basketball team members Adam Hall and Chris Williams both participated in the gold medal game. Hall played five minutes and dished out one assist. Williams recorded 27 minutes; he scored seven points and pulled down four rebounds. He also blocked three shots.
Not like a good neighbor: The U.S. field hockey team upset the heavily-favored Canadian squad, 1-0, in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Winnipeg. Only the gold medal winner advances with an automatic bid to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
The United States' Kris Fillat notched the game's only goal in the 49th minute of play to lift her team to the victory.
The USA is 2-0 in the tournament, while Canada falls to 1-2. The United States takes on the defending champions today when it plays Argentina.
Weinke cleared to return: Florida State starting quarterback Chris Weinke has been cleared by Tallahassee surgeon Charles Wingo and the Florida State medical staff to return to practice.
Weinke, who was injured against Virginia last season when ex-Cav Patrick Kerney hit him in the backfield, underwent spinal surgery last fall. X-rays taken Monday indicated that the two vertebrae had successfully been fused together.
Weinke will wear a green non-contact jersey during practice, August 7.
Jackets gain early commitment: Georgia Tech's men's basketball team has received an early commitment from Brendan Plavich. The Dalton, Ga., native chose the Jackets over Clemson and Vanderbilt. Plavich, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 29.7 points-per-game as a junior last season.
