Jones shines in scrimmage

In Wednesday's final preseason football scrimmage, tailback Thomas Jones led the Cavalier effort, rushing for 143 yards and scoring three times. Jones scored on runs of 16, 23 and 45 yards.

Wide receiver Demetrius Dotson had five receptions, including one for a touchdown.

Defensive back Jermaine Lauzon led the defense with 10 tackles, while place-kicker Todd Braverman connected on field goals of 20 and 23 yards and David Greene kicked a 34-yard field goal.

No more Mooney: Fifth-year guard Kate Mooney will not play for the Virginia women's basketball team this season in order to devote her time to her final year in the School of Architecture. Mooney, who redshirted last season, made the decision, along with Head Coach Debbie Ryan, to bypass her final season of eligibility in order to complete her classes.

Faster than a Speeding Bullet: In his 29th start, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson set a record Thursday, reaching 300 strikeouts in a season in the shortest time. Pedro Martinez held the previous mark, reaching 300 in 31 starts in 1997.

Johnson hit No. 300 with his eighth strikeout, which ended the fifth inning Thursday against the Florida Marlins.

Johnson's achievement makes him one of three pitchers who has reached the 300 mark three times, joining Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax.

Also Faster than a Speeding Bullet: Michael Johnson shattered the longest-standing men's track record Thursday, running 400 meters in a time of 43.18 to win his fourth World Championships title in a row.

The Olympic 200 and 400 champion broke the 11-year-old mark of fellow American Harry Butch Reynolds, who had clocked 43.29 seconds in Zurich on Aug. 17, 1988.

It was the first world record that was broken at these World Championships. Fellow American Stacy Dragila tied the world record in the women's pole vault.

Johnson also owns the 200 meter world record of 19.32 seconds, which he set at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
