Cavs hold off Cougars with late interception

Saturday night's 45-40 football victory over Brigham Young marked a series of firsts for both football teams. It was the first time the No. 24 Cavs played in the Mountain Time Zone, the first time in 15 years that the Cavaliers wore completely white uniforms, and most importantly, it was the first time in over a year that the Cougars lost at home.

"This was a crucial win for us," Cav coach George Welsh said. "We've got Virginia Tech next and the ACC is a tough conference, especially with Georgia Tech and Florida State."

After the first quarter, Virginia held a 21-point lead, but at the end of the half, the lead was cut to nine, as the teams headed to the locker rooms with the Cavs leading, 28-19.

The Cougars were at Virginia's heels all throughout the second half and seemed poised to pull out one of their classic come-from-behind victories.

With 3:15 to play, Cougar quarterback Kevin Feterik lofted a pass in the direction of receiver Michael Westbrook. Virginia's Jermaine Lauzon came down with the ball in the end zone, but he was called for holding. That gave BYU a first down at the Cavaliers' 22 near the three-minute mark. But the Cougars were called for a holding penalty and Feterik threw incomplete twice before Jerton Evans intercepted the ball in the end zone to insure a Cav victory.

"The win goes to everyone," Evans said. "I got a pick at the end of the game, but that doesn't amount to the win. We just came out here and stuck together as a family"

Lauren Seeliger and Brandon Kile, two third-year Cavalier Daily News writers, discuss the impact of the student housing frenzy on both University students and the Charlottesville community.
